The California Histor- ical Vehicle Association, Mt. Shasta Division, will once again host the Red Bluff River Park Car Show 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the River Park. Chairman Vince Dunn said he expects around 225 cars to enter this year. Reg- istration is $10 per car to be paid upon arrival and entry is free for spectators. Ham- burgers and Polish dogs will be sold along with baked goods. The show, in its 41st year, will feature a 1951 Mer- cury coupe belonging to Terry Thompson of Red- ding. Thompson's Mercury won the vote of the CHVA car club as the car of the year. The green Mercury is a 2-door known as a flat head Ford V-8 with 110 hp. Thompson bought the car about 15 years ago. He had a friend in high school who drove an identical car. "It is the same year, color, model and interior as my friend's," Thompson said. "I couldn't afford one back then, but I always wanted to have one." He originally bid on the car at the Silver's auction at Hot August Nights in Reno. Another person kept outbid- ding him and the car end- ing up going to New York. About two months later Thompson saw the car for sale in Hemmings Motor News. He "just knew" it was the same car. This time he got the car, and it was shipped to him in Redding. Thompson has been to several car shows with his Mercury and has won sev- eral awards. In Sunday's car show there will be 11 classes to compete in beginning with 1900-1945 Pre-War vehicles and going through 1979, both stock and modified. Vehicles entering the show will receive a ballot to vote for all 11 categories along with a dash plaque. Entrants will also receive a ticket for the door prize raffle. Awards presentations will begin at 1 p.m. There will be dozens of raffle prizes both donated by the businesses in Red Bluff and purchased by the car club to be raffled off. Fifty-fifty tickets will also be sold and an ice cream booth will be available. T- shirts will be on sale. "The Red Bluff River Park has lots of shade and it makes for a relaxing fam- ily-fun day," said club Presi- dent Steve Elkins. River Park Car Show set for Sunday I have a can of lacquer thinner that I keep handy for one purpose: To clean up any kind of paint spills on carpet, tile or clothes. It works well, but it is a pain, to tell you the truth. And now it dawns on me. Why not do something clever to prevent the spills in the first place? Yeah, I like that a lot better. Paintcancoaster When I am doing a painting job, I always glue a paper plate to the bot- tom of the paint can be- fore I open it. That way I can pick up the can when- ever I need to move it and I know that the paper plate will catch all the drips and spills. — Sam De-salt the sauce If you find that your tomato sauce or soup is too salty, just add a little brown sugar. It will neu- tralize some of the salty taste. — Janet No-stick beaters Before you use your electric mixer, spray the beaters with some non- stick cooking spray. It will keep the batter or frosting from clinging to the beat- ers and clogging them. — Sarah Freezing bread Whenever I freeze bread or bagels, I always add a dry paper towel to the in- side of the storage bag be- fore slipping it in a freezer. The paper towel soaks up the extra moisture and the bread stays fresher longer once defrosted. — Carolyn So en hands Here's a fast and easy way to soften hands: Squirt two tablespoons of inex- pensive lotion into your hands. Add a generous ta- blespoon of sugar, and rub the concoction all over your hands. The sugar ex- foliates your hands and the lotion softens them. Rinse with warm water, wash off the solution and apply a fresh coat of lotion. Soft, smooth hands for pennies! — Brooke Extra buttons If you buy an outfit that comes with extra buttons, sew them onto an inside hem of the clothing item. If you lose a button, you won't have to go searching through your junk draw or sewing box for a spare. — Janine Clean car I used to pay someone to detail my car but discov- ered that baby wipes will clean nearly anything off every surface and not leave a streaky, cloudy residue like the cleaners the pros use! I have taken grease off the headliner and door interi- ors, and cleaned all the tex- tured places and the seats with just one baby wipe. Not only are they gentle, they're cheap. Just store some in your car. If you stick the container in a zip bag, they won't dry out with the heat of the interior. — Bambi Open soda bottles Use a nutcracker (the cheap squeeze kind) to grab and turn open the tops on twist-top glass soda bottles — it's a snap! — Sue Play dough When I make play dough, I color it by adding a packet of unsweetened drink mix (Kool-Aid type) instead of food coloring. The colors are vivid, and it has the added plus of a fun smell. The kids love it! Just add this to the dry ingredients when you are mixing and let the fun begin! — Mary * Just in case you're won- dering, here's how to get la- tex paint out of just about anything including carpet — even if it's old and dried. Saturate the stain with lac- quer thinner (not paint thinner, not mineral spirits or anything else you might be tempted to substitute — you must use lacquer thin- ner), applied with a clean white cloth so there is no chance of transferring the color from the cloth to the item to be cleaned. Allow it to sit for a few moments to soften the paint so you can scrape, blot and or scrub it out with the application cloth. Depending on how old the paint stain is, you may have to repeat a couple of times, but it will come out without leaving a bigger problem in its wake. I don't know why this is such a fa- vorite tip of mine. Maybe it's because it's such a dra- matic rescue for a sloppy painter such as myself. Caution: Lacquer thin- ner is highly combustible, so don't wad up that cloth and throw it in a bucket. Instead allow it to air dry, then launder appropriately.
