Also part of the performance was Woodson's fourth- and fifth-graders on their recorders. During the week, most elementary schools came over to Maywood for a band performance. A reception was held after the ceremonial portrait hangings. Every yogurt lid turned into Yoplait before Dec. 31 will be turned into 10 cents for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, up to $2 million dollars. Maywood was able to redeem 53 lids. Gerber gathers groceries Courtesy photo The Gerber School Student Council concluded its annual food drive in collaboration with the Food for the Hungry program.The students sent home flyers and parents and students alike responded by contributing canned foods and dry goods for this worthy cause.The students liked knowing that the food collected will go to local families. "It feels good to help out our community," said Student Body President, Kobe Kehoe. Food for the Hungry is a locally run organization that operates year-round. Parents shared the experience, learning about practical, fun ways to encourage their children to remain active. "I became a teacher because of my teachers," said Bonnie Baxter, Agri- culture teacher and FFA advisor at Los Molinos High School. "Teaching isn't a job, it's a lifestyle." Baxter was recently rec- ognized as the "Feature Teacher", an award given monthly to Tehama County teachers through a commu- nity partnership between the Tehama County Depart- ment of Education and local Edward Jones Finan- cial Advisor Tyler Smail. "Ms. Baxter has shown true dedication to her stu- dents and to the teaching profession," said Larry Champion, superintendent of schools. "Her ability to inspire a love of learning Tehama District Jr. Livestock and set the bar high for her students is the reason she is being recognized with this award." Baxter attributes her academic successes to her students' enthusiasm for learning, saying, "The stu- dents are the reason I was honored. It was their achievements and commit- ment to excellence that allowed me this recogni- tion." Baxter works tirelessly to educate her students in ways that prepare them for whatever career path they choose, saying "I am com- mitted to engaging, inspir- ing, and challenging my students to achieve."
