The Market House is the focal point of downtown Fayetteville and was built on the site where North Carolina ratifi ed the Constitution of the United States in 1789 and chartered the University of North Carolina the same year. A museum unique to Fayetteville and this culture that attracts many is the Airborne and Special Operations Museum. Nestled in the heart of Downtown, the museum is a place to honor and preserve the legendary feats of the airborne and special operations troops who have contributed so much to defending our nation's interests. The Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex tells of the rich history of southeast North Carolina, learning Native Americans, European settlements, slavery, plank roads, steam boating, the Civil War and more. In Downtown Faye eville: of America's Hometown addition to permanent exhibitions and a changing gallery, exhibits on naval stores, early 19th Century domestic life, transportation, and folk potters are featured. Other attractions include Arsenal Park, the remnants of the Fayetteville Arsenal, and the restored Victorian residence of E.A. Poe. Step back in time at the Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum, which traces the history of Fayetteville/Cumberland County from Native Americans to 20th century through the use of exhibits, artifacts, educational panels, photographs, models dioramas, and video productions. The museum even offers archival information on Fayetteville's historic districts and landmarks! And of course, the Field of Honor will fl y starting May 16, which serves as a living display of heroism and a patriotic tribute to the strength and unity of Americans, and honors all who are currently serving, those who have served, and the men and women who have made the supreme sacrifi ce for our nation's security and freedom.
