ByJosephShufelberger jshufelberger@chicoer.com @JShufelberger on Twitter CHICO A stellar pitching matchup was undone by porous defense, but Eric Schreter stuck around for the finish anyway. The left-hander threw a com- plete game as the Red Bluff High baseball team rallied for a 5-4 victory over Pleasant Valley in eight innings Tuesday at Ron Do- ryland Field in Hooker Oak Rec- reation Area. Sam Hendricks' double scored Wesley Clawson after he had sin- gled to start the eighth inning, and that was the lone run in the contest that was earned as each team committed four errors. "We were talking about that. Obviously, we gave them the op- portunities with our mistakes. So did they," PV coach Fred Lud- wig said. "We just didn't capital- ize on it like we should have." The victory gave the Spar- tans at least a share of the East- ern Athletic-Sacramento River League title, and they still have three games to play, starting with a 7 p.m. Friday rematch with PV. Red Bluff, though, needed a rally merely to force extra in- nings Tuesday. By Rob Maaddi The Associated Press From the Amazin' Mets to A- Rod smacking homers, it's been a wacky first month in the majors. The Astros are surprise divi- sion leaders while the defend- ing champion Giants and un- derachieving Nationals are last. The Brewers — not the Phillies or Twins — have the worst record. A former MVP already has been traded. Star pitchers got hurt at the plate. And, those pesky pace-of-play rules really did cut down average time of games. All this before the Baltimore Orioles hosted the Chicago White Sox in what is believed to be the first game closed to the public in the 145-year history of the major leagues. THESCORE By Paul Newberry The Associated Press ATLANTA Al Horford and Jeff Teague scored 20 points apiece, helping the top-seeded Atlanta Hawks hold off the Brooklyn Nets 107-97 Wednesday night in an NBA playoff series that's closer than anyone envisioned. Shaking off a dislocated finger, Horford flew around the court in the fourth quarter when it looked like Brooklyn was on the verge of bouncing all the way back from an early 17-point deficit. In the fi- nal minute, Teague darted into the lane for a couple of baskets that sealed another hard-fought victory. Atlanta leads 3-2 in the best- of-seven series, which heads back to Brooklyn for Game 6 Friday night. The Hawks can wrap it up, but the eighth-seeded Nets seem intent on taking it to the limit. By Tim Dahlberg AP Boxing Writer LAS VEGAS His middle name is Money, or at least it used to be before Floyd Mayweather Jr. stopped flashing $100,000 wads of cash every time he saw a cam- era. That doesn't mean money is ever very far from his mind. Cer- tainly not now, when he's the rich- est man in the richest fight ever. Mayweather has spent as much time this week talking about the mansion in Las Vegas, the home in Miami and the private jet that seats 14 than he has about Manny Pacquiao. He even figured out the math when it comes to dividing it up among his kids. "Let's say I make $200 million," Mayweather said. "That means my kids for this fight will get $50 million apiece. I think I made a smart move." Indeed, Mayweather proved a smart businessman in signing for a fight that will likely earn him $180 million or more. But the smartest thing he may have done was delay the fight five years so it would be must-see TV, even at a record price of $99.95.
