ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com REDBLUFF TehamaCountyPub- lic Works Director Gary Antone presented the Board of Supervi- sors with bad news Tuesday, in- cluding at least a $1.5 million shortfall in the 2015-2016 fund- ing year, the loss of a few proj- ects and potential job losses. "Our road project funding has had a severe impact as of late," Antone said. "What we're talking about here is funds that cover spe- cific road maintenance." The Highway Users Tax comes from the state gas tax based upon the population and the number of road miles to be maintained. It is here that the department is fac- ing a $1.5 million hit compared to last year's funding. The event raised more than $18,000 last year to benefit can- cer research and programs, and Mayor Gary Strack recently pro- claimed Saturday as "Paint Our Town Purple Day" in the city. "Thecolorpurpleisthesignature color of the American Cancer Soci- ety'sRelayforLifeevents, signifying thepassionofcancersurvivors, their families and loved ones feel for the eradication of this disease," accord- ing to the proclamation. CORNING Relay for Life set for Saturday RED BLUFF The 11th annual Civil War Days reenactment will take place Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26, at Sam- uel Ayres and Dog Island parks. Cannon and musket fire will be heard during two daily bat- tles at noon and 3 p.m. on Sat- urday and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The site will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Visitors can stroll Dog Is- land's well-shaded trails and visit Confederate, Union and ci- vilian camps, where they can talk with the occupants and learn about life during Ameri- ca's greatest conflict. The battles, which feature special effects, reconstruct the sights and sounds of Civil War fighting, with authentic Civil War tactics and weapons. Pre- pare to "advance and give the countersign" as Union and Con- federate pickets may be encoun- tered on some of the park's back trails. The natural setting of Dog Is- land, free from modern sights and sounds is eerily reminiscent of the wilderness area of north- ern Virginia near Chancellors- ville, where some of the Civil War's bloodiest fighting took place in the famous Overland Campaign. The 72nd New York Volun- teer Infantry, one of several units and non-profit organi- zations that make up the Fed- eral Brigade of the Reenactors of the American Civil War, are the event hosts. The RACW is a non-profit club based in North- ern California, comprised of sev- eral Union and Confederate in- fantry, artillery and cavalry units, as well as a large civilian contingent. RACW members are dedicated living historians who strive to recreate the daily expe- riences of both soldiers and ci- vilians during the Civil War. Rick Barram, event coordina- tor and member of the 72nd New York, talked about what people will see at Dog Island. "You'll see military camps and bivouacs, just as they were in 1863 or 1864," Barram said. "You'll see artillery, cavalry and civilian demonstrations. You'll hear period music and talk to soldiers and civilians engaged in everyday routine. Of course, when the battles begin, you'll see the tactics, heroism and tragedy of our greatest conflict. Directors Andrew Meredith, Jorge Lomeli, Shanna Long, Pete Dagorret, Greg O'Sullivan and Joan Bell voted in favor of the move. Linda Durrer and Farrell Shatswell voted no. Cheryl Weibling was absent.
