Blue Knights Ride for Fallen by JIM JONES The Blue K night s Home Grow n Heroes and Fallen Of f icer Memorial R ide is scheduled for May 2. The Blue K night s is a non-prof it f raternal organizat ion consist ing of act ive and ret ired law- enforcement of f icers who enjoy riding motorc ycles. In t he spring of 1974, several law enforcement of f icers f rom t he Bangor, Maine, area met and formed a small motorc ycle club. The rest, as t hey say, is histor y. Soon, Blue K night s' chapters were formed in Massachuset t s, New Hampshire, and beyond. The club went internat ional to Canada and Aust ralia. A s of 2009, t he Blue K night s had 599 chapters and almost 20,000 members in 29 count ries. According to t he bylaws, t he group's purpose and goals are to: 1. Prov ide for t he mut ual assist ance, enjoy ment, enter t ainment, edu- cat ion, physical, ment al and social benef it of it s members and t he gen- eral public. 2. To promote and advance t he spor t of motorc ycling and t he safet y of motorc ycling. 3. To ser ve t he interest s of motorc ycle ow ners and users. 4. To promote by example and any ot her accept able means, safe use, operat ions and enjoy ment of motorc ycles. 5. To develop a f raternal spirit bet ween law enforcement personnel and t he public. It is dif f icult st at ing what makes t he Blue K night s so special. Perhaps t he follow ing w ill help explain t he k inds of feelings t hat f low when a bunch of motorc ycle-riding police of f icers get toget her. "Giv ing back to t he communit y is one of t he biggest joys of being a Blue K night . They enjoy going to handicapped children's camps, giv- ing k ids rides and seeing t he smiles on t heir faces. They do a variet y of f undraising act iv it ies for t hose less for t unate. The Cyst ic Fibrosis Foundat ion, Make-a-Wish Foundat ion, Toys for Tot s, D. A .R .E . and Concerns of Police Sur v ivors are some examples of our favorites." This is a great oppor t unit y to come out and prov ide suppor t to t hose who help t he riding communit y be safe and projec t a great image for motorc yclist s. The ride w ill leave f rom t he Of f icer Dow n Monument at t he Law Enforcement Center located at 131 Dick St reet, in dow ntow n Fayet tev ille. Pre-regist rat ion is encouraged; on-site regist rat ion begins at 8 a.m., and t he ride event s st ar t at 9:45 a.m. The cost of t he ride is $20 per rider and $15 per passenger. The f irst 100 riders to register w ill receive a patch at t he event . Pre-regist rat ion ends on April 25. The Blue K night s are excited about t he public's interest in t his ride!
