(AP) — Aaron Rodgers threw for 281 yards with two touch- downs and an intercep- tion in less than three full quarters' worth of work, Ryan Grant had two touchdowns rush- ing and Charles Wood- son picked off a pass against his former team as the Green Bay Packers trounced the Oakland Raiders 46-16 on Sunday. With the win, the Packers ran their record to 13-0 — leaving them only three games short of completing a perfect regular season. And they did it with a near-perfect performance. Carson Palmer threw for 245 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions for the Raiders (7-6), who looked like anything but legitimate con- tenders in the AFC West. The biggest con- cern for the Packers was an apparent left knee injury to wide receiver Greg Jennings in the third quarter. Packers defensive lineman Ryan Pickett also walked to the locker room after sustaining a head injury in the third quarter. By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor Rivalries have a way of bringing out the best in competition, even when there's less than ideal circumstances. That's what occurred Saturday at Red Bluff's Holiday Classic wrestling tourna- ment when the hosts Spartans met the Corn- ing Cardinals in an otherwise insignificant dual meet. The start of both programs' seasons have been plagued by low numbers of wrestlers to fill the varsity divisions and Saturday was no exception for either team. The schools are also scheduled to meet Tuesday in Corning at 6 p.m., so Saturday's matches could have easily just been chalked up to exhibition. But with all that as the backdrop, Red Bluff's Bryce Eggert and Corning's Daniel Welborn reminded everyone why you should never overlook a Red Bluff-Corning matchup. The two put on a show in their 182- pound match that stretched through three regulation periods, sudden death, and a pair of tiebreakers before finally being settled in an ultimate tiebreaker. Eggert had choice to start the final 30- second period and chose down with both wrestlers visibly gassed, their teammates pumped up behind them and the coaching staffs vocally involved as well. It turned out to be the right choice for 41 55 21 19 Sports Round 1: Red Bluff 1B Monday December 12, 2011 Branquinho, Proctor, Feild winners at NFR LAS VEGAS (AP) — Luke Branquinho won his third world steer wrestling championship and third National Finals Rodeo aggregate title Saturday night, finishing sixth in the 10th and final round with a 4.7-second run. Branquinho, from Los Alamos, entered the final round in a three-way fight for the world and aggregate crowns with Jason Miller of Lance Creek, Wyo., and Shawn Greenfield of Lakeview, Ore. But Miller and Greenfield broke the start barrier and received 10-second penalties. ''Those guys (Miller and Greenfield) were going in there knowing they had to win good in the rounds to stay ahead in the (aggregate) and get the money they needed,'' Branquin- ho said. ''They were taking a chance, you know. ''If I was in their situation, knowing that I had to win good in the go-rounds, I maybe would have clipped the barrier, too. But that's just rodeo. It happens day in and day out in rodeo, and unfortunately for those two it happened in round 10 at the NFR.'' Branquinho made $234,518 this season. Second-place Greenfield finished with $178,420, and third-place Miller earned $177,455. At the NFR, Branquinho led with $146,779, and Greenfield was second with $98,798. In the aggregate race, six-tenths of a second separated Miller, Greenfield and Branquinho after nine rounds, but Branquinho prevailed with a time of 41.9 for 10 rounds. Trevor Knowles of Mount Vernon, Ore., and Mickey Gee of Wichita Falls, Texas, tied for first in the round at 3.6. In barrel racing, Lindsay Sears of Nanton, Alberta, won her second world championship with $238,064 by securing the $45,865 bonus that goes to the NFR aggregate standings champion. Sears, second in the round with a time of 13.75, won the aggregate title with a time of 139.5 for 10 rounds. She won $133,558 at the NFR. Brittany Pozzi of Victoria, Texas, who led the world standings for the first nine rounds, finished ninth in the aggregate standings after failing to place among the top six with a time of 18.8. She earned $192,725 this season. Jane Melby of Backus, Minn., won the round in 13.71. In team roping, header Turtle Powell of Stephenville, Texas and heeler Jhett Johnson of Casper, Wyo., won their first world and aggregate championships after placing sixth in a time of 10.00. Powell earned $195,407. while Johnson made $197,112. Header Chad Masters of Cedar Hill, Tenn., and Jake Corkill of Fallon, Nev., and header Spencer Mitchell of Colusa, Calif., and heeler Broc Cresta of Santa Rosa, Calif., tied for first in the round in 3.6. See NFR, page 2B Eggert, who escaped Welborn's grasp for a 3-2 win. The three points he earned for the deci- sion turned out to be the difference in a 39- 36 Red Bluff win. Eggert had been four seconds away from winning the match in regulation. He held a 2-0 lead into the third period when it was Welborn who had chosen to start down. But Welborn finally broke free with four ticks remaining and Eggert was docked a point for locking hands to even the match at 2-2. Eggert and Welborn are two of the bright- est bets Tehama County has at a section placer at this spring's Masters. Red Bluff's Kyle Case, another surefire candidate for that type of honor, and possi- bly a trip to Bakersfield for the state champi- onship, won the 152-pound division by for- feit. So did Corning's Erik Miranda at 220 pounds, another wrestler with big hopes in 2011-12. Five of the 14 divisions during the Red Bluff-Corning dual were forfeited by one team or the other. A sixth division, 195s, wasn't competed by either team. The rest of the matches were all settled by pin. At 106 pounds, Red Bluff's Marco Gon- zalez pinned Devon Hiller in 1:33. Red Bluff also got the win at 113 with Marco Rodriguez pinning Shane Hansen in 3:52. Corning's Coy Parker pinned Zacharie Dittner in 4:37 in the 126-pound division. Corning also picked up wins at 132s where Nathan Fultz pinned Jordan McManus in 1:22 and 138s where Matt Cochran pinned Armando Aguilar in 1:38. At 145-pounds Red Bluff Eddie Samay managed to pin Franky Maaele in 5:18. Packers perfect 13-0 after 46-16 win over Raiders Skelton, Fitzgerald lead Arizona past 49ers GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — John Skelton was awful against San Francisco a month ago. This time was a far dif- ferent story. Skelton stepped in for the injured Kevin Kolb and threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns, and the Arizona Car- dinals rallied to hand the San Francisco 49ers their third loss of the season, 21-19 on Sunday. Larry Fitzgerald had seven catches for 149 yards, including a 46-yarder for a touch- down and a 53- yarder to set up the go-ahead score in the fifth victory in six games for Arizona (6-7), which ended a five-game losing streak against the 49ers. Kolb left the game after a blow to the head on Arizona's third play. Skelton, benched after throwing three intercep- tions in the Cardinals' 23-7 loss at San Francisco on Nov. 20, had a 60-yard TD pass to Early Doucet and a 3-yard toss to Andre Roberts for what proved to be the winning score early in the fourth quarter. Skelton, a second-year pro from Fordham, improved to 4-1 as a starter this season. Arizona sacked Alex Smith five times after getting five against Dallas in its 19-13 overtime win over the Cowboys a week earlier. The 49ers (10-3) were at the Cardinals 4- yard line twice and the 6 once in the second quarter and had to settle for short field goals by David Akers each time. Frank Gore rushed for 72 yards in 10 carries for the NFC West champion 49ers (10-3), including a 37-yard touch- down run that put San Francisco ahead 19-7 early in the sec- ond half. He passed 1,000 yards rushing for the fifth time in his career, but didn't do much damage after that. The 49ers were without standout inside linebacker Patrick Willis, who missed the second game of his career, because of a right hamstring injury. On Arizona's possession following Gore's big run, Fitzgerald went over the middle and outjumped safety Dashon Goldson for the ball, then ran the remaining 20 yards for the score to cut the lead to 19-14 with 9:04 left in the third quarter. On the play, Fitzgerald passed 1,000 yards for the season for the sixth time in his eight years in the NFL, the last five in a row. Then on the first play of the fourth quarter, Fitzgerald took a pass over the middle and ran to the San Francisco 20, a 53-yard play. On third-and-2 from the 12, Skelton threw a screen pass to Doucet for a 9-yard gain to the 3. Skelton threw to Roberts on the next play, and the receiver crossed the goal line for the touchdown that gave the Cardinals their only lead of the game, 21-19, with 11:50 remaining.
