ByJulietLinderman The Associated Press BALTIMORE Baltimore police filed official docu- ments in court saying that a man who died after his spine was nearly severed while in their custody had been arrested "without force or incident." Officer Garrett Miller asked that 25-year-old Freddie Gray be charged with carrying a switch- blade, punishable by a year in prison and a $500 fine, according to court records obtained Monday by The Associated Press. Miller's charging docu- ment doesn't provide any explanations for the in- juries that would lead to Gray's death a week later. He wrote only that while being taken to the station, on April 12, "the defendant suffered a medical emer- gency and was immedi- ately transported to Shock Trauma via medic." That description doesn't completely coincide with the timeline police made public four days later, which says the "prisoner transport wagon" stopped on the way to the station to enable police "to place ad- ditional restraints on the subject." The timeline says an- other 30 minutes then passed before an ambu- lance was called to pick him up at the police sta- tion. Gray arrived at the hospital in critical condi- tion and died on Sunday after a weeklong coma. The documents, which misspell Gray's name as "Grey," were first reported Monday by The Baltimore Sun. Police had not previ- ously mentioned a knife, or publicly disclosed the charge against Gray. Miller's signed report says he personally recov- ered the knife from Gray's pocket. It names five other officers to be summoned as witnesses in court, and says Gray was stopped af- ter a brief foot chase be- cause he "fled unprovoked upon noticing police pres- ence." The Gray family's at- torney, Billy Murphy, dis- puted the police timeline and said the injuries Gray suffered while in police custody were fatal. "His spine was 80 percent sev- ered at his neck," Murphy said. "We have no confidence that the city or the police department is going to fairly and objectively in- vestigate this case," Mur- phy added. Activists protesting ex- cessive use of force and even Baltimore city offi- cials say they have more questions than answers. About 50 people marched from City Hall to police headquarters Monday, car- rying signs reading "Black lives matter" and "Jobs, not police killings." BALTIMORE Kn if e ch ar ge f or m an dead a er police run-in By Jennifer Peltz The Associated Press NEW YORK The Post and Courier of Charleston, South Carolina, won the Pulitzer Prize for public service Monday for an ex- amination of the deadly toll of domestic violence, while The New York Times col- lected three awards and the Los Angeles Times two. The Seattle Times staff took the breaking news award for its coverage of a mudslide that killed 43 peo- ple and its exploration of whether the disaster could have been prevented. The New York Times and The Wall Street Jour- nal both won investigative reporting prizes, the Times for an examination of lob- byists' influence on state at- torneys general, the Journal for a project that showed readers previously confi- dential information on the Medicare payment system. The Times' coverage of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa won Pulitzers for in- ternational reporting and feature photography. The Los Angeles Times' prizes were for feature writing on the effects of California's drought and for Mary Mc- Namara's television criti- cism. Coverage of one of the biggest U.S. stories of the year — the deadly police shooting of Michael Brown that led to racial unrest in Ferguson, Missouri — earned the St. Louis Post- Dispatch a Pulitzer for breaking news photogra- phy. The prizes spanned news outlets large and small: The 70,000-circulation Daily Breeze of Torrance, Cali- fornia, won the local report- ing award for exposing cor- ruption in a school district. And Bloomberg News was a first-time winner, taking the explanatory reporting award for an examination of corporate tax dodging. The Post and Courier ex- plored the deaths of 300 women in the past decade and a legal system in which abusers face at most 30 days in jail if convicted of attack- ing a woman, while cruelty to a dog can bring up to five years in prison. The Pulitzer judges called it "a riveting series that probed why South Car- olina is among the deadli- est states in the union for women." "We felt so passionate about this project, and we felt so passionate about the difference it could bring to South Carolina," said P.J. Browning, publisher of 84,200-circulation Post and Courier, which last won a Pulitzer in 1925 for edito- rial writing. Since the series was pub- lished, state lawmakers have proposed tougher pen- alties for domestic violence, and Gov. Nikki Haley cre- ated a task force to investi- gate the problem. "That's what our paper is all about — it's making dif- ferences in public service," Browning said. The Seattle Times news- room erupted in cheers af- ter its mudslide coverage was honored. The Pulitzers, established by newspaper publisher Jo- seph Pulitzer and first given out in 1917, are American journalism's highest honor. The public service award consists of a gold medal; the other awards carry a prize of $10,000 each.
