20 UCW APRIL 15-21, 2015 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM How Many Genocides Is That? Home (Rated PG) by HEATHER GRIFFITHS I wasn't really jazzed to see Home (94 minutes), but t he alternat ive was t he mov ie w it h all t he angr y people driv ing way above a reason- able speed limit, so here we are. Just so you k now, I am w rit ing major spoilers in t he rev iew. Honest ly, it 's a children's mov ie based on a children's book, so if you are going to enter a rage spiral over t he few det ails I slip in, consider sk ipping to t he end. No spoilers in t he last paragraph. I promise. The Boov (which sounds like it ends in a B instead of a V ) are f lee- ing t he Gorgs. The Boov Capt ain Smek (Steve Mar t in) decides to hide out on Ear t h. Of course, t he human race present s a bit of a w rink le, but t he Boov quick ly relocate all of humank ind to Happy Human Land, a series of concent ric ghet tos in Aust ralia. W hich, let me make t his clear, is apparent ly t he latest relocat ion in a long histor y of ghet toizing t he inhabit ant s of whatever planet t he Boov decide in which to hide. W hat happens when t he original resident s rebel against t heir capt iv it y goes undisclosed, t hough I can't help but pict ure a Warsaw-st yle uprising going on behind t he scenes of t he main mov ie. The ent ire opener of t he stor y is narrated by a Boov called Oh ( Jim Parsons). If you are a fan of Parson's whiny lit t le non-voice, you'll prob- ably enjoy his exposit ion more t han I did. Don't get me w rong , I'm sure he's lovely in real life. I just f ind his voice t he vocal equivalent of a leaf blower shoot ing grit and pollen direct ly into my eyes, and his "comical" mangling of t he English lang uage has way more misses t han hit s. Just like in real life, all annoy ing t hings must event ually end, and t he point-of-v iew shif t s to Grat uit y "Tip" Tucci (R ihanna). W hy R ihanna get s second billing to Parsons is a myster y, since she stea ls t he show and dominates ever y scene t hey share. I am not a huge fan of R ihanna, but my goodness c an she emote! She even managed to lend credibilit y to Jennifer Lopez , play ing her mot her, Luc y. For t he collec t ive "meh" t hat g reeted t he f ilm, which is good intent ioned, if not ter r ibly or ig i- na l, it 's a shame t hat R ihanna's charac ter izat ion of Tip isn't get t ing more recog nit ion. Since Tip and Oh appear toget her in all t he prev iews, it comes as no surprise t hat t hey are event ually t hrow n toget her by circumst ance. The t wo of t hem, along w it h her adorable cat, Pig , join forces to f ind her mot her and do some ot her st uf f in t he "B" plot . And if t hat sounds generic, don't blame me. There is not a whole lot here to dist ing uish it f rom most ot her animated mov ies. The emphasis is on mov ing t he stor y f rom point A to point B, w it h ver y lit t le innovat ion in bet ween. Overall, I can't say it's the worst for-children movie I've ever sat through (that honor went to Hannah Montana: The Movie in 2009). There's something very appealing about Tip, who comes from Barbados, and her pet cat Pig. W hile most of the one- liners fall f lat, the ones that worked surprised me into at least a heart y chuckle.
