ByAndrewBaggarly BayAreaNewsGroup SAN FRANCISCO The Giants followed "Fire On The Moun- tain" with a wet blanket. They raised a World Series banner, then hoisted a white flag in ev- ery clutch at-bat. They cheered Madison Bumgarner on horseback in their home opener, and it was all road apples from there. The Giants left eight run- ners on base in the first three innings alone, failing to take advantage of another impres- sive start by right-hander Chris Heston in a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies at sun- splashed AT&T Park on Mon- day afternoon. Troy Tulowitzki hit an RBI single in the fourth inning and Nick Hundley scored an unearned run in the seventh when he kicked the ball out of Heston's glove in front of the plate. That's all it took to beat the defending World Series champions, who were more wasteful than a lawn sprin- kler in a stiff breeze. The Giants failed to carry over the pomp and pageantry from the pregame ceremonies; a sellout crowd reveled in past glories — and enjoyed the mu- sical stylings The Marshall Tucker Band — but filed out of the ballpark with no clear notion of what kind of team they'll be watching in 2015. By John Hickey Bay Area News Group HOUSTON Scott Kazmir once again needed to pause midgame to be checked out by the A's medics, but in the end he ran his record to 2-0 with a dominating performance over Houston in an 8-1 Oakland win Monday. The left-handed starter complained of back tightness midgame last Wednesday but managed seven one-hit score- less innings, in his first start against the Rangers. Monday, Kazmir was checked out by manager Bob Melvin and trainer Nick Papa- resta in the fourth inning after his control began to waver. He established his ability to go on, remaining in the game for the moment. He wound up throw- ing six three-hit innings before the bullpen cleaned up. The win for Kazmir got the A's back on their feet af- ter back-to-back extra-inning losses to the Seattle Mariners got under Oakland's skin over the weekend.
