ByJacquesBilleaudand Josh Hoffner The Associated Press PHOENIX Thenearlyseven- year legal saga of Jodi Arias ended Monday as a judge sentenced her to life in prison for killing her ex- boyfriend, and the victim's sisters unleashed their pain over the 2008 murder that captivated social media with its salacious details. Three of Travis Alex- ander's sisters tearfully urged Judge Sherry Ste- phens to impose the harsh- est penalty available against Arias. They described Arias as "unrepentant" and "evil" and lashed out at her for smearing Alexander's name. Samantha Alexander cried as she recalled walk- ing into her brother's house after investigators had fin- ished collecting evidence there. "He was there for five days," she said. "Five days he is there decomposing in the shower. I'm sure his soul was screaming for someone to find him." Alexander family and friends hugged each other with tears in their eyes but smiles on their faces after the judge imposed the most severe of two available sen- tences and denied Arias a chance to be eligible for re- lease after serving 25 years. Before the sentence was handed down, Arias gave a rambling statement in which she stood by her tes- timony and accused police and prosecutors of chang- ing their story during the investigation. She said she was sorry for the pain she caused Alexander's family and friends. "I'm truly disgusted and I'm repulsed with myself," Arias said, recalling the mo- ment she put a knife to Al- exander's throat. She has acknowledged killing Alexander but claimed it was self-defense after he attacked her. Pros- ecutors said Arias killed Alexander in a jealous rage after the victim wanted to end their affair. Arias, wearing black and white striped jail clothing, cast her gaze away from Alexander's sisters as they spoke to the judge, but looked at her mother as she sought leniency. MURDER CASE Killer Jodi Arias gets life term with no chance for release The Associated Press TULSA, OKLA. Prosecutors charged a reserve sheriff's deputy with manslaughter Monday in the death of a man who was fatally shot as he lay on the ground at the officer's feet — a shoot- ing that was certain to raise questions about the use of volunteer officers to supple- ment full-time police. The sheriff's office has said Robert Bates, a 73-year-old insurance ex- ecutive who was volunteer- ing on an undercover oper- ation in Tulsa, mistakenly pulled out his handgun in- stead of his stun gun and shot the suspect as he strug- gled with deputies. Bates, who is white, was charged with second-de- gree manslaughter involv- ing "culpable negligence" for the April 2 death of Eric Harris, a 44-year-old black man. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison. It was the latest fatal shooting by a police offi- cer to draw national atten- tion after months of inves- tigations and protests of other deaths in Ferguson, Missouri, New York City, Los Angeles and other else- where. A video of the incident shot by a deputy with a sun- glass camera and released Friday at the request of the victim's family, shows a dep- uty chase and tackle Harris, whom they said tried to sell an illegal gun to an under- cover officer. As the deputy subdues Harris on the ground, a gunshot rings out and a man says: "Oh, I shot him. I'm sorry." Harris screams: "He shot me. Oh, my God," and a dep- uty replies: "You f---ing ran. Shut the f--- up." When Harris says he's losing his breath, a deputy replies, "F--- your breath." Harris was treated by medics at the scene and died in a Tulsa hospital. The family said in a state- ment that it was "saddened, shocked, confused and dis- turbed." "Perhaps the most dis- turbing aspect of all of this is the inhumane and mali- cious treatment of Eric af- ter he was shot," the fam- ily wrote. "These deputies treated Eric as less than hu- man. They treated Eric as if his life had no value." At a news conference on Monday, Andre Harris, the victim's brother, said he does not believe the shoot- ing was racially motivated. Oklahoma law defines culpable negligence as "the omission to do some- thing which a reasonably careful person would do, or the lack of the usual or- dinary care and caution in the performance of an act usually and ordinarily ex- ercised by a person under similar circumstances and conditions," Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said in a state- ment. A telephone message left Monday with Bates' attor- ney, Scott Woods, was not immediately returned.
