"It has to DO something, Mom!" was the benchmark by which they determined if a toy was cool or not. A toy had to transform or light up or, in the case of Super Joe Comman- der, wield a one-two punch. Applying that same criteria to online personal finance tools, I've got one to tell you about. My Savings Machine calculates how small spend- ing cuts can grow into big savings. My Savings Machine (www.bills.com/ways-to-save/) works off the premise that we all spend small amounts of money on things like lunch, coffee, pedicures, movies, golf, pizza delivery and so forth. At the time, these expenditures seem to be worth- while -- if not necessary -- but insignif- icant. Really, how much difference does, say, $20 make in the big scheme of things? The answer is "a lot," if you're willing to take a look at this harsh reality: that by saying yes to small, seemingly insignificant purchas- es today, you may be forced to say no to the things you really want or will need in the future. Next, using the sliders, select how much you spend a week on the select- ed category, the expected rate of return if you put that money into an online savings account and a designated time period to achieve your financial goal. For example, use the $5 you drop into a vending machine each work week for a couple of snacks. Do without, and My Savings Machine calcu- lates that at just a 1 percent rate of return, you could save $260 in a year. What could you do without? My Savings Machine is a calculator that identifies saving opportuni- ties and calculates what would happen if instead you saved those small amounts, and how it could multiply over time.
