Max Scherzer pitched no-hit ball into the sixth in his Washington debut, Sonny Gray took a no-hit try into the eighth for Oak- land. "It's a small sample size and there are a lot of dif- ferent factors, I guess," Na- tionals closer Drew Storen said. No hint, however, that the new speedup rules are throwing hitters out of their rhythm. Or that pitch- ers are gaining any advan- tage by trying to work more quickly. "There's going to be trends in this game, but water always finds its level," he said. "Two weeks from now, maybe every- body will be scoring touch- downs." As for his own pitching in this period of dimin- ished offense, he said: "I don't really sit there and go, 'Oh, OK, now I can get away with more middle- middle heaters.'" A look at this recent shoutout for shutouts: BrrrrBats No hitter likes chilly conditions. After a wicked winter in the Northeast and Midwest, it's been OK at many ballparks. But Yankee Stadium was raw, and it's a long way till sum- mer. "I think it's true that pitchers are ahead of hit- ters coming out," Wash- ington manager Matt Wil- liams said. "I think weather has something to do with it. Standing up there with a piece of wood in your hand and having it be 40 degrees and misting is not condu- cive to offense. It just isn't." Adjusting Approach New York Yankees man- ager Joe Girardi says the lack of scoring affects how he runs a game. "I've talked about it a lot, there's less runs in the game now, and I think you do have to manage differ- ently," he said. "I think you might play your infield in a little bit more or you might say, 'OK, we'll give them one more here but there's no way we can give them two or three.' I mean, I think you do manage dif- ferent now." Shutouts FROM PAGE 1 tually — to feel optimistic. The top-seeded Warriors (64-15) are on pace to fin- ish with the NBA's highest- rated defense for the first time in franchise history, and Bogut manning the middle might be the big- gest reason why. His conventional statis- tics — 6.4 points, 8.2 re- bounds and 1.7 blocks per game — are modest by league standards. But any- body watching the War- riors can see the 7-foot cen- ter from Australia makes all the difference down low, calling out coverage, shor- ing up the rotation and guarding the rim. A case could even be made that Bogut should be the team's leading can- didate for Defensive Player of the Year over versatile forward Draymond Green. Bogut began Friday lead- ing the league in defen- sive-plus minus (plus-5.7), second in defensive rating (96.2) and second in oppo- nents' shooting percentage at the rim (40.5 percent). Bogut believes either he or Green should win the award, if for no other rea- son than what the War- riors have accomplished as a team. He's just asking voters to look past the of- fense, where sweet-shoot- ing guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson soak up so much attention. "People are still like, 'You guys are high-scoring, can you sustain that in the playoffs?' I'm like, 'Hold on a second, buddy. We're No. 1 in defense, too,'" Bogut said. One of the most pivotal points in the Warriors' rise is the March 2012 trade that brought Bogut to Golden State and sent fan favorite Monta Ellis to Mil- waukee. Bogut gave Golden State the stopper it had long craved, helping change the franchise's decades-long culture of overvaluing of- fense. But Bogut's seasons have been often derailed by injuries, including last spring when a fractured rib kept him from play- ing in the first-round play- off loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Since Milwaukee made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, Bogut's injuries include a dislo- cated right elbow, broken right hand, sprained right wrist and broken left an- kle. He also has battled back discomfort on occa- sion. Bogut FROM PAGE 1 ing to complete the career Grand Slam to trying to stick around for the week- end after a 40 on the front nine. He rallied with a 31 on the back nine to make it easily, though he was still 12 shots behind Spieth. "It's really, really impres- sive," McIlroy said. "I think a few guys can still catch him. It will take, obviously, something extraordinary from myself to get up there, but you never know. I know better than most people what can happen with the lead around here." McIlroy lost a four-shot lead in the final round in 2011. Tiger Woods broke 70 at Augusta National for the first time since 2011. He had a 69 and joined McIl- roy at 142, only his outlook was more upbeat. "I'm still right there," Woods said. "I'm 12 back, but there's not a lot of guys ahead of me. And with 36 holes here to go, anything can happen — '96 proved that. So we have a long way to go." He was referring to Greg Norman losing a six- shot lead on the final day in 1996. Spieth might find com- fort in another reference. The three other players who had a five-shot lead after 36 holes at Augusta — Herman Keiser in 1946, Jack Nicklaus in 1975 and Floyd in 1976. All went on to win. Spieth sure looked like a winner, even though it was just Friday. The fans treated him like one. They rose to their feet and applauded when Spi- eth walked onto the 12th tee, and for the next two hours, ovations greeted him on tee boxes and greens. The red number next to his name on the leaderboard — 14-under par — was better than 11 of the last 13 winners. "I got standing ova- tions walking to multi- ple greens," Spieth said. "I mean, that's something you can only dream about. It's Friday, too. I'd like to have the same thing hap- pening on Sunday. Got a lot of work to do before that happens." Hoffman tried to keep pace with Spieth and ran off three birdies on the back nine until closing with a bogey for a 68. He was five shots behind at 135, a score that would have been lead- ing at 36 holes in the last three Masters. Masters FROM PAGE 1 and a driving layup to put the Thunder back in front for good, and Anthony Morrow capped the spurt with one of his five 3s. The Thunder expanded a six-point lead at the end of three quarters into a 17-point margin down the stretch. Morrow helped put the game away with a pair of fourth quarter 3-point shots as Oklahoma City broke a four-game losing streak. Kanter finished with 24 points, Dion Waiters 22 and Morrow 19 for the Thunder. Sacramento got 20 points from Ben McLemore and 17 each from Ray McCallum and Williams in losing its fifth straight on the road. Missing Stars Both teams were miss- ing a pair of key perform- ers. Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka are out for the season for Oklahoma City. Sacramento was without its top two scorers, DeMar- cus Cousins and Rudy Gay, who account for 46 points a game for the Kings. Tip-Ins Kings: McCallum made a return to the area where he spent his formative years. He grew up in Nor- man while his dad was an assistant basketball coach at Oklahoma. Thunder: Nick Collison returned after missing nine games with an ankle injury. Collison scored five points, and grabbed seven rebounds and a steal in 20 minutes. Up Next Kings: visit Denver on Sunday.
