REDDING The Shasta College main campus will host an Earth Day celebra- tion on Earth Day, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 22. The event will be cen- tered in the main campus quad from This is a free event. There will be more than 20 agencies and organiza- tions in the Campus Quad who manage and care for our region's environmen- tal quality and/or educate toward the utilization of sustainable practices. Var- ious Shasta College de- partments that assist the college with its commit- ment to sustainability will also be present. The event is designed to be academic in character, so that those who attend the event can discover more about the environment of the north- state and our regional con- nections. This year, author and environmental activist Rick Bass will be on hand for book signing following his Speaker Series presen- tation— Earth Day Eve, 7 p.m. April 21, at at the Shasta College Theater. Bass' work inspired this year's them for our Earth Day event, "wilderness." There will be prizes, live music, readings, and games as we look to pro- mote environmental awareness and sustain- able practices through an atmosphere of cele- bration. An "Earth Day Expe- dition" map will be avail- able to engage students on the event theme and each agency's role regard- ing that theme. The Expe- dition map, along with a "Water Wise" trivia game, will be used to award prizes. Short readings and poems will be presented by faculty members and from Bass on the Campus Quad Stage. The six high school students and the school they represent, from le , are Daisy Carrillo, Corning High School, Gillian Coelho, Mercy High School, Juan Rodriguez, Los Molinos High School, Aislynn Lair, Red Bluff High School, Kyle Salazar, Salisbury High School and Haley Bumpus, Centennial High School. RED BLUFF ELKS Each month the Red Bluff Elks honors students grades 6 through 12 from the schools of Tehama County. The recipients are treated to a buffet lunch and given a plaque to add to their portfolio. Each student delivered a nice speech thanking their parents and teachers and explained their future vo- cational goals. Everyone in attendance stated that the luncheon was a very re- warding experience. The three students were honored as the Corning Exchange Club students of the month for March. Padilla's teacher, Mrs. Whitley, was unable to attend and Mrs. Farmer stood in for her. EXCHANGE CLUB STUDENTS HONORED REDDING Over 110 stu- dents participated in com- munity service on Simp- son University's strike teams during the fall 2014 semester. Students helped with 32 projects, includ- ing cleanup, events, mov- ing, and maintenance, at many different locations. Among local students who participated were Mi- chelle Jaramillo of Corn- ing, Shannon McKenna of Red Bluff and Steven Rob- erts of Cottonwood. Strike teams at Simp- son University began dur- ing the 2012-13 school year after the university's ninth annual Day of Service, where students served at more than 10 locations in the Redding area. With a heart for serving the local community, the university created an ini- tiative to continue service year-round. Since Septem- ber 2012, more than 100 projects have been com- pleted. SIMPSON St ud en ts s er ve t he c om mu ni ty Whittenberg Country School recently had a ser- vice day at Ridgeway Park, during which the K-8 stu- dents picked up trash and removed brush. They also explored the park and played on the playground and ballfield. The school uses the park for many events through- out the year, including the Pumpkinhead Family Bike Ride in October and the Almond Blossom Ball in February. The school will have its annual play day at the park 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat- urday. Families interested in learning more about the school are invited to come out to the park for any or all of the play day, where there will be such activities as sack races, a kickball game, and more. Families are also invited to bring a picnic lunch. In June, the school will put on an Old Time Country Fair at Ridgeway Park, a free event for fam- ilies, with generous sup- port from the Rolling Hills Casino Commu- nity Develpment Founda- tion. The fair will feature booths from various local individuals, businesses, and organizations, as well as games, food and music. The fair will also have books to give away to the first 200 kids in at- tendance.
