After scoring just 12 points in their game Friday night, the Mercy offense appeared as if it would be just as dreadful in the first quarter against Williams. The Yellowjackets led 18-2 after the first period. But then something clicked. Mercy found its groove in the second quarter behind a trio of buckets from post player Isaac Williams. MIAMI (AP) — Miami Dolphins cornerback Von- tae Davis blitzed from the blind side for his first career sack, then dashed upfield in jubilation. A dazed Carson Palmer rose slowly, looked back at Davis and did a dou- ble take, as if startled to discover his tackler was a 5- foot-11 cornerback. The Dolphins are full of surprises lately. Once-woeful Miami won for the fourth time in the past five games Sunday by beating Oakland 34-14. Reg- gie Bush ran for 100 yards and a touchdown, Matt Moore had a hand in two TDs and Kevin Burnett returned an interception 34 yards for Miami's final score. The surge by the Dolphins (4-8) comes after they lost their first seven games. In the past five weeks they've outscored opponents 139-54, with the lone loss a one- point defeat at Dallas on Thanksgiving. ''We've been on a wild ride here,'' Moore said. ''We've had our ups and downs,'' Bush added, ''but Mercy's big man would finish with 16 points, including 6-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. In the second half other War- riors got involved as Harlow Johnson and Tommy Garcia both connected on 3-pointers. Mercy would outscore Williams 22-12 in the second half. Garcia finished with seven points, Steven Rodriguez had six and Johnson wound up with five. Mercy (0-3) heads to the Trin- ity Tournament, Thursday. Bush helps Dolphins beat Raiders 34-14 I couldn't be more proud.'' The Raiders (7-5) fell into a tie with Denver atop the AFC West, and the rout ended their three-game winning streak. Oakland fell to 6-25 in regular-season games in the Eastern Time Zone since December 2002. ''We couldn't run. We couldn't stop the run. We did- n't pass very well,'' coach Hue Jackson said. ''Just a bad day at the office.'' The rout takes some luster off Oakland's next game against unbeaten Green Bay. Miami — a team that totaled four touchdowns dur- ing one five-game stretch — secured the victory with a 21-point third quarter, including two TDs in a 20-sec- ond span. The Dolphins led 34-0 before Palmer threw two touchdown passes in the last eight minutes. By the final period, the Dolphins were feeling frisky. Bush took a jarring hit from linebacker Aaron Curry try- ing to catch a pass, then showed his resilience by rolling onto his stomach and doing five pushups. 58 64 Sports BOYS HOOPS Sutter 54 Los Molinos 40 RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor LOS MOLINOS—A strong third quarter rally wasn't enough for the Bulldogs to overcome an earlier scoring drought, foul trouble and the physicality of the Huskies in a 54-40 loss, Saturday night, at the Block LM Tournament. After scoring just three points in the second quarter, Los Molinos found itself down 34-17 in the open- ing minutes of the second half. Sean Conrad ignited the Bull- dogs with a 3-pointer and followed it up with a steal on the other end. That led to a pair of Ryan Mekech free throws to cut the deficit to 34-22. Mekech would then pick up his fourth foul and head to the bench, but the Bulldogs rally continued as another Conrad steal led to a Gilbert Zamora bucket. Dom Ceja then laid in a bucket and dished to Conrad for another score. Both Ceja and Conrad would fin- ish with 12 points each. Conrad capped the rally when he drew a foul and made both free throws and the Bulldogs looked up at the scoreboard to see they had cut the game to 34-31. But that 3-point deficit would be the closest the Bulldogs would get to Sutter. Midway through the fourth quar- ter the Huskies blew open the game when they had a 5-point trip down the floor. A Huskie was fouled as he made a three pointer then Sutter got the offensive rebound off a missed free throw and put it back for a score. The series broke open the game to 46-36 and Los Molinos would never get the momentum back. Sutter made 34 trips to the foul line during the game and although they converted just 13 free throws the fouls forced Mekech and Conrad to the bench for long periods of time. Sutter also dominated the smaller Bulldogs on the glass and time after time had second and third looks on their offensive possessions. Daily News photo by Rich Greene Los Molinos' Dom Ceja drives to the bucket against Sutter, Saturday night. Mekech finished with eight points. Edward Garnica had four points and Isidro Madrigal and Gilbert Zamora each had a buck- et for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1- 3 on the season. So much for the lockout slowing him down. Left tackle Joe Staley delivered the celebratory Gatordade dousing on Harbaugh's head in the closing moments of Sunday's 26-0 win over the St. Louis Rams that wrapped up that long-awaited divi- sion title for a once-proud franchise determined to return to the glory days of Jerry Rice and Joe Mon- tana, Steve Young and Roger Craig. Frank Gore helped run San Francisco (10-2) right into the post- season, becoming the 49ers' career rushing leader by passing late Hall of Famer Joe Perry and finishing with 73 yards. Alex Smith threw second-half touchdowns of 52 and 56 yards to Michael Crabtree and Kyle Williams and David Akers kicked four field goals to help Harbaugh join George Seifert (1989) and Steve Mariucci (1997) as the only rookie coaches in franchise history to win the division. The only downer came when star linebacker Patrick Willis left the game in the first half with a right hamstring injury. Rams quarterback A.J. Feeley struggled in place of injured starter Sam Bradford for the reeling Rams (2-10), who watched several more key players go down. San Francisco became the NFL's second team to secure a playoff berth behind defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay. The 49ers bounced back from a discouraging 16-6 loss at Baltimore on Thanksgiving night against the Ravens and Harbaugh's big broth- er, John, with another methodical victory. Smith was sacked nine times in that game and four more Sunday. Despite further problems con- verting in the red zone early, San Francisco shut out an opponent for the first time since a 35-0 home win at Candlestick Park on Oct. 4, 2009. That was also the Rams' last shutout. 1B Monday December 5, 2011 Bulldogs rally falls short
