10 | April 2015 publisher's note I n my last column, I told of my encounters with Dean Smith and one of those was at the Jack Nicklaus golf exhibition in Chapel Hill 34 years ago. I told of how I was with renowned local real es- tate magnate J.P. Riddle and how he used his influence to allow us the once in a lifetime chance to play golf with the famous Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus's career was slowing down at the time but he had won two of his record 18 major championships the year before the exhibition in 1981. We arrived at the cocktail party the night before the event and people were submitting sealed bids to see who would play with Nicklaus the next day. With approximately ten minutes le before the unveiling of the winners, J.P. asked me and his longtime friend and aide, John Sum- mers if we wanted to play with Nicklaus. John said "no way" and I said I "couldn't afford" to put in a bid. J.P. said, "at is not what I asked you. Do you want to play?" Well, of course we did! Five minutes later, they were announcing the winners to play with the infamous Jack Nicklaus. It was us! e picture you see here was on our second hole and J.P had asked me how the putt broke to the hole. Jack took an opposite view than I. J.P. pulled the putt very badly and it went in on the break I had projected. I turned to Nicklaus, who was completely fooled by the putt and I said jok- ingly "no wonder you haven't been winning lately." He replied, "I need you reading putts for me." J.P.'s widow March died February 28th at the age of 87, (see Bill Mc- Fadyen's story, e Gales of March). e Riddles were a lot of fun to be around. We went to football games, played in golf tournaments over the years and they were our dinner companions many times. Our lives were blessed and enriched by knowing them.
