Thirteen stu- dents participated by demonstrating their talents in singing, playing a musical instrument, using American sign language and clogging. Those participating were Giancarlo Nandino, Veron- ica Ulrich, Leah Li, Francesca Aguilar, Gabe Sartori, William Gentry, Mark Zunter, Michelle Jaramillo, Emy Nelson, Mahalee Gaumer, Jennifer Gentry, Mercy Glee Club and Danny Sandoval. Judges this year were Mark Franklin, director of the Masterworks Chorale, Denise Peters, choir accompanist for Sacred Heart choir and Mercy alum, and Sister Gloria, past principal and music director of Mercy High School. The judges had a difficult task in choosing the top three performers because all participants performed wonderfully. The judges chose Francesca Aguilar, who interpreted and performed the song "Smile" by Uncle Kracker using American Sign Language, for third place. Second place honor went to Mahalee Gaumer, whose singing and guitar accompaniment of a song by Lady Gaga had the entire audience clapping along. The first place honor was given to Jennifer Gentry for her piano performance of the theme song to the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean." All the participants received gift certificates from Tommy K's yogurt and Dutch Brothers coffee. First place received $40, second $20 and third $15.
