ByDeniseSnider, Executive Director Continuingtheeffortsto improve the lives of children and their families, Tehama County will recognize the importance of Child Abuse Prevention Month and cel- ebrate Week of the Young Child all month long. By hosting free educa- tional events throughout April, local organizations will honor the nearly 5,000 young children ages 0 to 5 countywide. "Building better futures for young children is what Tehama County and First 5 Tehama is all about," said Denise Snider, executive di- rector of First 5 Tehama. "What we do to make pro- grams and resources read- ily available to parents and caregivers is an investment in our children's future suc- cess, as well as our commu- nity." The Tehama County Ed- ucation Foundation has scheduled the 27th Annual Children's Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25 to be held at the Tehama County Dis- trict Fairground and will feature crafts, fun games, educational activities, and visit the Mobile Dental Clinic — all totally free. The First 5 Tehama funded School Readiness program (through Tehama County Department of Ed- ucation) will be providing a fun, delicious food activity. Parents are welcome to sit with their child and make a fun snack — recipe cards will also be offered. As part of this month's celebration, School Readi- ness is focusing on early lit- eracy by encouraging chil- dren and their families to read daily and be prepared for kindergarten. The pro- gram is offering a variety of playgroups that will as- sist parents in helping their children be ready for school. Research shows that a child's brain develops most dramatically in the first five years and what parents and caregivers do during these years to support their child's growth will have a meaning- ful impact throughout life. Based on this research, Cal- ifornia voters passed Prop- osition 10 in 1998, adding a 50 cents-per-pack tax on cigarettes to support pro- grams for expectant par- ents and children ages 0 to 5. First 5 Tehama has in- vested approximately $10.5 million in Prop. 10 reve- nues in programs and ser- vices that meet local needs.
