D NEWSAILY RED BLUFF TEHAMACOUNTY T H E V O I C E O F T E H A M A C O U N T Y S I N C E 1 8 8 5 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor A half-dozen Spartans were named to the 2011 Eastern Athletic League-South All-League team. Red Bluff had three players make the offensive team and three chosen for the defensive team. Junior wide receiver Mitch Fox earned an honorable mention. Down lineman Brandon Ragone was the only junior of the All-Lea- guers and one of only two under- classmen across the entire league to be honored on defense. Ragone's athleticsm and speed forced many teams to double him. He had solid pass rushing skills and the ability to disrupt a running game. The junior scored on a 50- yard-plus fumble return against West Valley. "Defensively, we're very excited to have an All-League nose guard coming back," Red Bluff coach John Miller said. Of the seniors, the biggest sur- prise of the season was kicker Niklas Ericsson. Ericsson booted a pair of long field goals in the Tehama County Shootout, provided quality field position through his kickoffs and was nearly flawless on extra points. Described as "Mr. Dependable" by Miller, Gage Grabfelder received his All-League honor at linebacker. "He was a guy we could not afford to have off the field," Miller said. Grabfelder made big hits on defense and was flexible enough to play secondary at times. He was also the team's No. 1 option in the running game. That running game was led by All-League center Ryan Hassel. The senior played virtually every snap of offense and defense for Red Bluff as the Spartans aver- aged around 28 points per game. "He was just real solid," Miller said. Smith had the ability to reach the end zone no matter where on the field he was or how many defenders were surrounding him. On defense he was matched up against other teams' No. 1 wide receivers and played the role of a true shutdown corner. Senior Garrett Spangler was named to the All-League team at wide receiver. He produced the Spartans' longest offensive play of the season a 71-yard reception, but could also be a possession receiver when needed. Spangler also started on the defensive side of the ball. Fox was another Spartans' wide receiver threat. His sure hands on quick outs fit perfectly in the Spartans' offensive scheme. He also made a memo- rable circus catch for a touchdown against Las Plumas and was a solid contributor on special teams cover- age. Raiders enter final month in prime position ALAMEDA (AP) — The Oakland Raiders head into the final month of the season in a most unusual place after an eight-year stretch of disappointment and losses. They stand alone in first place in the AFC West. Oakland (7-4) has a one- game lead on Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos after beating the Chicago Bears 25-20 Sunday. So instead of preparing to play out the string on another failed season, the Raiders head into December with legitimate hopes of winning the division and making it to the playoffs for the first time since winning the 2002 AFC championship. While most of the play- ers in Oakland have little understanding of what it takes to win meaningful late-season games or of going to the playoffs, there are a few veterans ready to dole out advice. ''Seize the opportunity,'' said defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who won three Super Bowl titles in New England. ''You'd rather play in games like this where every play is mean- ingful rather than a game where the stands aren't filled. It's so much more fun for everybody. It's a game that we're playing. It's not life or death. ... The bigger the game the more exciting and more fun it is.'' Next up for the Raiders is a trip to Miami on Sunday to play the improving Dol- phins (3-8). That will be fol- lowed by a high-profile game in Green Bay that has already been moved into the national doubleheader win- dow to give it more expo- sure. That's a far cry from recent years when the Raiders went through an NFL-worst stretch of seven straight seasons of at least 11 losses. ''It's something new around here and we're going to try and keep it that way,'' defensive end Lamarr Hous- ton said. The Raiders solved a few nagging issues in the win against the Bears with the defense limiting Matt Forte to 59 yards rushing and 84 MCT photo Marcel Reece celebrates Oakland's victory against Chicago. yards from scrimmage — 55 yards below his league- leading average coming into the game. Oakland also committed only six penalties for 44 yards and no personal fouls after averaging more than 10 penalties a game coming into the week. Seymour credits the change to players paying more attention to detail with so much at stake at this point in the season. ''Everyone realizes the opportunity that we have,'' Seymour said. ''You don't want to be the guy that squandered it away. Just try- ing to play smarter and still play aggressively.'' The Raiders also were able to win on a day that the running game was held to 73 yards on 27 carries and big-play threats Darren McFadden, Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore were all sidelined by injuries. But Carson Palmer threw for 304 yards — his third time in four starts with at least 299 — as the Raiders won for just the second time See PRIME, page 2B Brandon Giles, Las Plumas, SR Cody Pol, Las Plumas, JR 2011 All-EAL-South Football Team Offensive Team Down Lineman: Clinton Bradford, Lassen, JR Down Lineman: Taylor Palade, Paradise, SR Down Lineman: Dustin Kenshalo, Paradise, SR Down Lineman: Brandon Ragone, Red Bluff, JR Linebacker: Jariah Booker, Las Plumas, SR Linebacker: Matt Damm, Lassen, SR Linebacker: Jacob Thorton, Oroville, JR Linebacker: Griffith Jones, Paradise, JR Linebacker: Gage Grabfelder, Red Bluff, SR Deep Back: Gage Edwards, Las Plumas, SR Deep Back: Dalton North, Lassen, SR Deep Back: Kyle Madden, Paradise, SR Deep Back: Ty Smith, Red Bluff, SR Defensive Team Honorable Mention Linebacker: Bryce Thompson, Lassen, SR
