Sigma kappa Alumnae Update IN MEMORIAM Dorothy Bublitz Opfer '37 passed away December 13, 2014. Dorothy was born June 23, 1918, in Kansas City, Mo. She attended Southwest High School, earned her B.A. from KU (Phi Beta Kappa) and an M.A. from UMKC. For 30 years Dorothy taught science, math and home economics in the Park Hill School District and was a guidance counselor in the Liberty School District. Her love was her family and church where she was an elder. She played the organ, sewed for charity and enjoyed playing bridge with friends. She shared her vitality, love, advice, acceptance and chocolates with all. Judy Bock Carey '60 passed away April 22, 2014, in New Braunfels, Texas. Judith Ann was born May 13, 1940, in Kansas City, Kan., the second child of Edward and Dorothy Bock. The family moved to Topeka in 1951. Judy attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a B.S. in elementary education 1962. Judy married Lt. Douglas Coulter Reed in 1961. The family, including their three sons, had army military assignments in Germany, Kansas, Virginia, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Texas. Judy returned to Topeka in 1982 and taught in Washburn-Auburn schools. In 1984 she married William Carey. They relocated to New Braunfels, Texas, in 1995. There she taught at Saints Peter/Paul School. She lived life fully and was devoted to family and friends. Her favorite interests were travel, gardening, volunteering, quilting, music, art and animals, especially her cats. ALUMNAE NEWS Alice Hayes Burke '43 turned 90 years old last December. She resides in Fayette, Mo. Donna Karr Kibbey '49 reports that her husband, Edward, passed away December 10, 2013. She still enjoys traveling with her niece and spends much of her time with her cats and enjoys cooking. Donna Lea Steeples Childs '53 enjoys her psychiatric practice which includes children, adolescents, and adults. She lives in Prairie Village, Kan. E-mail: rchilds@kc.rr.com Mary Poe Smith '55 belongs to a chair exercise class at their very active senior center. She makes birthday cards and cupcakes for their members. They have over 40 members who come on different days and usually have about 30 or so to keep them busy. She is also on the fellowship committee at her church and they too are very active. Her family is busy as well with various activities. Mary Fran resides in Port Angeles, Wash. Mary Carter Pendergrass '57 enjoys Florida life in Naples. She retired last year due to health issues. Mary enjoys having company and is busy during the winter months. She enjoys being in her home and has family and friends which she loves. Her family in Missouri are regular visitors. "The new SK house looks great; quite a change from the old days. You are all doing a great job. Keep up the good work!" Sandy Powell Stout '58 spends time in their RV going to antique car shows since her husband's retirement. They have 10 grandkids and eight great-grandkids who keep them busy.
