"It is our chance to help those who follow us (and now represent us) to be able to have similar experiences and opportunities that were made available to us by guys that went before us and never knew me or the 100+ guys I lived with in my era," he said. He is hopeful for the positive effect the renovations will have on the chapter and has been impressed with all of the positive changes that have come through so far. Tyler hopes to encourage more brothers to participate in the campaign and reminds them that membership does not come without responsibility. "It's our turn. If you can give financially, great, but also of major importance is for alumni to make the effort to re-connect with the chapter." In his free time, Tyler enjoys spending time with family by attending his daughters' sporting events and travelling. He also enjoys fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, Cardinal baseball games, and Mizzou football games. Atkins III '56 Shares His Motivation to Give T om E. Atkins III '56 was introduced to Phi Delta Theta by his high school best friend, Paul Medley '56. After Tom got to know the rush chairmen, Wilson Pollock '54 and Bud Werner '54, he knew that there was no way that he would join any other fraternity. "Phi Delta Theta contributed so much to my college experience and life after. It completed my life and through it I made some of my best friends. Missouri Alpha was an extremely important part of my life in 1952 and continues to be every day." Although his experience was slightly different than his pledge brothers' because he was a "townflake," and lived at home to save money, Tom didn't let that stop him from having fun. "During freshman duties we learned a lot about one another while cleaning the chapter house. The only way it got done was if everyone helped out. We got it done with a smile and those Saturday mornings brought us together." Tom's father owned a local bar, Stein Club, which was favored by fraternities, and especially Phi Delt. Tom often worked there and eventually was a customer. "My dad was a good taskmaster and thought I should have the best of everything as long as I was willing to work. If you wanted something you had to figure out how to get it yourself." After earning his degree in accounting, Tom was the first person in his family to graduate from college. He served in the military and, after returning, was offered a position in his family's service business dealing in janitorial, lawn care, pest control, and lawn irrigation sales. More than 40 years later, Tom has seen the company grow from five people to more than 350 employees. Missouri Alpha needs more alumni to follow Tom's example to succeed. He keeps in touch with many of his pledge brothers and also chose to give to the capital campaign. "I believe fraternities are essential to the university. Many of the fraternities that existed on campus while I was at MU are now gone. It is important to have support at all levels, financial and personal, for chapters to succeed." Tom lives in Columbia with his wife, Linda. They have two children and three grand- sons. He enjoys getting together with Ed Travis '56, John Hammond '56, Jim Carney '58, James Moreton '56, and Rick Horn '58 be- cause they all love Phi Delt as much as he does.
