McClatchy Newspapers EMBRACE ALL EMOTION The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: Life is an emotional experience. Everything we do or think ends with a feeling. The emotional diversity we have been blessed with are myriad moods and measures that make our lives deeply rich and rewarding. Every emotion has a purpose and a benefit to it no mat- ter how dark and disturbing or light and lovely. Most of us far prefer the happy feeling, and it should be indulged in with frequency, but not to the exclusion of the other emo- tions. Sadness, grief, disappointment and even degrees of anger bring to us contemplations that expand our awareness and add to our life experience. Imagine for a moment that the vast array of emotions you have are like a multitude of crayons in a box. Your favorite color may be violet because it instills within you a happy feeling. But how would it be if that was the only color you used? After a period of time you would get bored with "just" violet because your creativity would be limited. In addition you would have to leave it for a while and use other colors so it would have a specialness when you came back to it. The good life is a composition of all our emotions in bal- ance and experienced to the perfect degree without refute or resistance. It is all good, even when we think it bad. SHARE IN GOD'S LIFE The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kansas City: Yes! In the "Catechism of the Catholic Church," No. 1719 reminds us that "God calls us to his own beatitude." What a beautiful reminder, especial- ly for those who feel their joy has been robbed by the trials of life: God calls us to share in his own divine life! Happi- ness is to share in that life, a life extended through the per- son of Jesus Christ. The Beatitudes of Jesus, found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, attempt to reorient our lives so that we find true happiness, a true beatitude. What brings about beatitude? The poor in spirit, the clean in heart, those who mourn, those who thirst for righteousness. What the Beatitudes underscore is that the call to happi- ness directs us beyond ourselves, emptying ourselves in love for another. This is the truth of love, of true happiness, shown in the life of Jesus the Christ. Our own happiness is found in the participation of that life: self-emptying, out of love, for the good of another. The fact that many of us are ambiguous about embrac- ing these assertions with passion signals a sobering truth: We often fail to pursue what will make us truly happy. To quote Augustine, "God alone satisfies." We should strive to be happy all the time, a possibility realized by immersing our life into the self-emptying love of Jesus Christ. Unlikely conversion I know a man who can be over- bearing and intimidating. He thinks Christians are uneducated, preten- tious and are politically naïve. He is adamant that he has dedicated his life to seeking the truth and that is why Christians infuriate him. He thinks they are blinded with their own version of the truth and can't see what is straight in front of them. After badgering an opponent for what he sees as inconsistencies, he walks away disgusted, shaking his head. It seems impossible that this man would ever become a Christ- ian. There was a man in the first cen- tury who was just like him. His name was Saul. He also was pas- sionate about the truth. He held the highest educational degree of his time, that of a Pharisee, and was a member in good standing of the most prestigious legal council, the Sanhedrin. He was a man of great influence in his government and followed the laws of his country and religion to the T. He was highly intelligent and could win any argu- ment. He hated Christians so much he obtained an open warrant to arrest any person who was accused of being a member of the Way (the original name of Christians). It did not matter to him if they were men or women. He would tie them up with ropes and bring them back to the authorities to be tried. The first man killed under his authority was a man by the name of Stephen. The manner of death was by stoning. Saul watched over the cloaks of the crowd until the bloody body of the young Christian fell lifeless to the ground. Yet it was this Saul who wrote much of the New Testament. What would cause such an adamant enemy of Christianity to change his mind and join the ranks of Christ followers? It happened on a government mission to a city called Damascus. He was on his way to arrest more Christians when God knocked Saul off his high horse, quite literally. That began a series of strange events that would change Saul forever. He eventually became known as Paul and ulti- mately lost his life for the sake of preaching Christ as the risen Lord. Paul knew very well what it meant to be saved by grace; after all he had been a part of murdering God's children. God stilled loved him. He had been fully persuaded that he knew the truth and no one could persuade him otherwise. Yet from the time God spoke to him, he never again doubted who Jesus was or that it was by God's mercy that he was now his child. Some of us love people who are like Saul and the young man at the beginning of this article. We have talked, cajoled, become angry, and maybe even manipulated situations in attempting to persuade them to become Christians. When we are unsuccessful, we feel guilty, dis- couraged and struggle with the why question. We feel responsible for convincing them that Jesus is the way to Salvation. But if we were held accountable to save people, would that not be salvation by our works? Paul wrote of a God, who said light would shine out of darkness, and is the One who shines in our own hearts to give knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. How does God convince someone of the truth of who he is? I have absolutely no idea. I just know he does. Though Saul was convinced he Dr. Shirley Faye GodTalk was serving God by arresting Christians, he was fighting against God (Acts 9:4-5). The guilt must have been overwhelming when he realized the enormity of his sin. But Paul believed what John wrote, "If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteous- ness" (1 John 1:9). Paul himself wrote, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast" (Ephesians 2:8). He knew how many peo- ple he had harmed and how much he needed God's forgiveness and mercy. In the same way, if we honestly look back over our lives, we will remember people we have harmed in the name of Truth. Our actions may have been full of self righteousness and blinded by our conceit. We may feel that we don't deserve God's forgiveness. The good news is none of us are worthy of such love and mercy. Thankfully that is not the require- ment. The only requirement is to receive it. 'Journey to Bethlehem' in Anderson "As Shepherd's tend their flocks, the wise men fol- low the star leading to a manger and the "King of Kings."
