The Associated Press FRESNO Two women are suspected of going onto a school campus and as- saulting a pair of teenage girls who the women say had been bullying their son, police said Tuesday. The mother and step- mother of a 12-year-old Fresno boy are accused of driving up to the campus of Cooper Academy, rush- ing into the cafeteria filled with 100 people for an af- ter-school activity and as- saulting the two girls, ages 12 and 13, Fresno Police Lt. Joe Gomez said. The women claimed that they had first gone to school officials to stop the ongoing bullying, said Go- mez, who added that it ap- peared the girls had been making fun of the boy. "They said nothing was be- ing done," he said. "That's their allegation." The two women intim- idated one of the girls by pushing and touching her, Gomez said. A 15-year- old daughter of one of the women started to fight with another girl, who later complained of pain to her head and arm, he said. No one was seriously in- jured in the March 17 in- cident, but the 15-year-old girl and two women, ages 29 and 33, were later ar- rested on suspicion of fel- ony conspiracy and misde- meanor cruelty to a child, Gomez said. The women or their attorneys could not be reached to comment on the charges. Prosecutors said they had not yet re- ceived the case for review. Gomez said investigators are doing more interviews, and the case will be sent to prosecutors by April 2. The Fresno Unified School District issued a statement saying they are investigating the incident to determine possible dis- ciplinary action. MOTHER, STEPMOM Pair accused of assaulting girls they say bullied son The Associated Press FRESNO Greyhound Bus is not at fault in a 2010 deadly crash in Fresno that killed six people, including the driver and two passengers, a jury ruled Tuesday. The pre-dawn July 22, 2010, crash on Highway 99 killed six people, including the occupants of an over- turned SUV: Sylvia Garay, 18, of Dinuba; and Vanessa Gonzalez, 19, and Steph- anie Cordoba, 20, both of Fresno. Bus driver James Jewett and two bus passen- gers also were killed. The jury ruled that Grey- hound was not responsible in the deaths of the three young women who were in an SUV that had over- turned on a highway before the bus crashed into it, the Fresno Bee reported. Attorneys for the fami- lies of Garay and her two friends sued Greyhound for negligence, contend- ing Jewett was speeding in the fast lane, wasn't wear- ing his glasses, and the bus had bad brakes. If Jewett had been wear- ing his glasses and paying attention, he would have seen that several motorists had pulled over and turned on their emergency flashers in an effort to help the three young women after the SUV overturned, Fresno attor- neys Stuart Chandler and Ja- son Helsel, who represented the families, told jurors in closing arguments Monday. The California Highway Patrol, however, blamed the deadly crash on Garay, say- ing she was drunk when she overturned the SUV. Greyhound attorney Dana Fox said Jewett, an experienced bus driver, was well rested and wearing his glasses. The bus's brakes were found to be in good condition, Fox said.
