p. 3 SIGMA PHI EPSILON T oday over 85% of all SigEp chapters are Balanced Man chapters. The following is a list of common questions concerning the Balanced Man Program. What is the main difference between the BMP and a pledge system? First of all, let's clear some things up. A pledge system does not always equal a hazing fraternity; however, it does promote hazing activities for a number of reasons. First, a chapter with pledging is a two-tier system with two groups, pledges and brothers. This is not true with a BMP chapter where there are multiple levels of development, and the only separation is the member's knowledge of the ritual and his progress on his individual journey of brotherhood. A person becomes a brother when he accepts the invitation of membership, not after a certain time period and a one-time initiation process. A new member in a BMP chapter has all the rights and privileges that any other member in the chapter has. Does such a strong emphasis on the individual journey of each member take away from the unity of the entire group? This is a common misunderstanding and an argument commonly heard among pledging fraternities. They believe that pledging Our brothers going undefeated in the soccer tournament portion of Alpha Phi's philanthropy this year helped our Chapter take first place in this fundraising competition. Member Spotlights We want to highlight the good things some of our members are doing. These are three members committed to living out their passions. Andrew Bantly '16, a junior, recently finished his term as vice president of communications. He now works for the Emerald Media Group where he covers Oregon baseball and football. He also works for KWVA Sports Radio as a broadcaster for Willamette High School football. He hopes to pursue his passion for sports through journalism, his major. He is awaiting responses from media outlets such as Seattle Post-Intelligencer, for internships that will help prepare him for a future in a related field. Senior Matthew Steiger '15 has held the social chairman position and participated in many SigEp intramural teams. He is studying sports business and works as a marketing intern for Oregon Athletics. He credits landing this position to SigEp alumnus Dan Dang '14, who previous held a similar position. Matt has passed down advice and experience by similarly helping Jeff Rauma '15 and Alek Weltin '17 obtain marketing internships with Oregon baseball. Matt plans to graduate this spring and pursue a career in the sports marketing field. Hunter Heck '15, a senior, has held numerous positions in the Chapter: chaplain, NCU relations, vice president of programming, and senior representative on the member development committee. On top of his SigEp involvement he has created and produces comedy news program "The Weekly Rundown" alongside brothers Patrick Coyle '16 and Tyler Cady '17. Hunter is a human physiology and psychology double major pursuing a career in writing and performing comedy. As always, thank you for your support and feel free to drop by the house anytime!
