2A Daily News – Tuesday, November 22, 2011 Community people&events Medicare official to speak David Sayen, Medicare's regional administrator for California, will speak today to local Medicare beneficiaries about how to choose a Medicare health or prescription drug plan that fits their needs. The event will start at 10:30 a.m. at the Red Bluff Community and Senior Center, 1500 S. Jack- son St. Trained counselors from the State Health Insur- ance Counseling and Assistance Program (HICAP) will be present to help Medicare beneficiaries review their health and drug plans for 2012. The open enrollment event will run until noon. It's open to the public. Medicare's open enrollment season began earli- er and will last longer this year than in the past. Open enrollment began on Oct. 15 and ends on Dec. 7. This is the time of year when people with Medicare should carefully review their Medicare health and prescription drug plans. During open enrollment, beneficiaries can join a plan or cancel one that no longer suits them. A good way to shop for a new plan is to go to the www.Medicare.gov website. Click on "Compare drug and health plans." Information on health and drug plans also can be found in the "Medicare & You" handbook, which is mailed each fall to every Medicare beneficiary. Or beneficiaries may want to call Medicare's toll-free help line, 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633- 4227). Customer representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help walk them through their health and drug plan options. This recipe for Flash In The Pan Stir-Fry was category winner with $3,000 prize at the 2011 National Beef Cook-Off. 1 boneless beef top sirloin steak, cut 1 inch thick (about 1 pound) 1 cup uncooked whole grain brown rice 1/4 cup orange marmalade 4 teaspoons Asian chili-garlic sauce 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons vegetable oil, divid- ed 2 red or yellow bell peppers, cut into strips 1 medium onion, cut into thin slices 1/2 pound fresh asparagus spears, cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces 1. Prepare rice according to package directions. Set aside; keep warm. 2. Combine orange marmalade, chili-garlic sauce and salt in small bowl; set aside. 3. Cut beef lengthwise in half, then crosswise into 1/4 inch thick strips. 4. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add half of beef; stir-fry 1 to 2 minutes or until out- side surface of beef is no longer pink. Remove from skillet. Repeat with 1 teaspoon oil and remaining beef. Remove from skillet; keep warm. 5 In same skillet, heat remain- ing 2 teaspoons oil over medium- high heat until hot. Stir-fry bell peppers and onion 2 to 3 minutes. Add asparagus; stir-fry 1 minute. Add beef and orange marmalade mixture; cook and stir 2 minutes or until heated through. Serve over rice. Makes 4 servings. Total prepa- ration & cooking time: 35 minutes. "We have a real big shortage this year," said Shelter Manager Sue Benavides."The more blankets we can get the better." Twin-size blankets are preferred but PATH will take any size clean, washable and fast drying type blankets. Please no big heavy quilts that take forever to dry. PATH uses a laundromat to wash the blankets, and it gets very expensive. The shelter also is in need of pillows. If you as a church, organization, individual can donate some blankets, call Sue at 366-2121 to arrange a time to bring them to the shelter site.
