WED. NOV. 16, 2011 Vol. 8 Issue #140 www.DesertMessenger.com "Quartzsite's FREE Community Paper" 541-218-2560 Rockin' in Quartzsite "rocks again" Search and Rescue receives donation from Thrift Store Quartzsite Community Thrift Store gives out first donation to La Paz Search and Rescue (SAR) Submitted by Joanne Winer Last February, the Quartzsite Com- munity Thrift Store was started by several volunteers who wanted to be able to give out help to other organi- zations who did not always have the means to raise money for their needs. Several of us who had worked together before decided to try to get another thrift store going to help with this, and when the Salvation Army moved out of the building to open a new store on Moon Mountain Rd., we were offered the building. We started out with noth- ing, and had to do many weekly bake sales in front of the General Store to get enough money to get the legal work done to become a non-profit corpora- tion. It was a lot of work, and we finally got enough baking sold to get the pa- perwork done. We then needed to raise enough to get the power and water turned on, get insurance, and start get- ting supplies to get the store open for business. Many wonderful people came to offer their help, and we love them all for all their hard work and support. The store has been open since March, and it has been doing great, a little slower in the summer, but picking up again now that everyone is coming back to town for the winter season--more of SEE SAR ON PAGE 22 MAIN ST. Quartzite, AZ- Proud Neighbors of Quartzsite (PNQ) is sponsoring the 3nd Annual "Rockin' in Quartzsite-A Celebration of the Arts." Chicago had cows, Grants Pass had bears…Quartzsite is the Rock Capital of the World, so it's only natural to have "Rock Art" for Quartzsite's Public Art Event! PNQ held an Artist Reception, Saturday, No- vember 5, 2011, at the "Rock Motel" (a converted warehouse at Tyson Wells Show grounds). The public got their first glimpse of the "Rock Art"! Local artists including Quartzsite Elementary School students participated in this year's paint- ing. The Rock Art is now on display all through- out town during the winter season. This year's theme is "100 years in the Sonoran Desert". Everyone is invited to take the Self-Guided Tour using the "Rockin' Map" listed on Page 34 of this issue of the Desert Messenger. While visiting each Rock Art, be sure to vote for the People's Choice Award at each sponsor's location. And please say thank you to all the sponsors! Voting will continue through the end of February. At the conclusion of the event, a live Rock Auc- tion will be held at Town Park on March 3, 2012. This is your chance to own a one-of-a-kind "Rock Art". Make your plans to attend this fun event! The "Rock Art" is a must see while visiting Quartzsite!
