Ontheair The NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2007, Willis made Associated Press All-Pro teams in his first six seasons, all as a first-team honoree except for a second-team selection in 2008. He was the 49ers' first-round draft pick in 2007 and the 11th overall selection. "Taking me at No. 11 when people didn't have me as the top middle line- backer, that put pressure on me," Willis recalled. Willis was a team cap- tain each of the past four seasons under then- coach Jim Harbaugh, and coaches named Willis the Bill Walsh Award winner as team MVP twice in his career. Only running back Frank Gore and defen- sive tackle Justin Smith also won the Walsh Award twice. Before Willis took to the podium Tuesday, he was in- troduced by CEO Jed York, general manager Trent Baalke and coach Jim Tom- sula, the latter getting very emotional as he praised Willis. "He redefined his posi- tion," Tomsula said. "I've never met anybody more honest, more humble. That's what a man looks like in every sense of the word." York called it "a bitter- sweet day" for the 49ers, adding: "Pat, to me, is what embodies winning with class. Everything that he does on the field, every- thing he does off the field, and even the way he's gone about his retirement." About six teammates also were in attendance, including Eric Reid, Derek Carrier, Chuck Jacobs and Lawrence Okoye. None were made available for comment after the news conference. "He has tremendous class," Tomsula added. "He's insightful. He has wisdom beyond his years. I've never heard him com- plain. OK? I've never heard Pat Willis complain." Willis' feet, however, barked for this ending. "I understand the mag- nitude of this," Willis said. What's next? Willis said he now has time to do what he wishes, such as: "If I want to go fishing, if I want to go speak at a jailhouse, speak to kids, go home watch lit- tle brother play baseball, go on vacation with my lady ..." What's next for the 49ers? "This team, this commu- nity is going to miss you," Baalke told Willis. "It's go- ing to miss the leadership, the passion, the talent. It's going to be difficult to re- place." Willis, while thank- ing reporters privately af- ter the news conference, claimed the 49ers are in a positive place, especially at linebacker with NaVorro Bowman returning from a knee injury that sidelined him in 2014 and the poten- tial of "Little Chris" Bor- land. "There's no doubt you can carry forward and ac- complish great things on the football field," Baalke said. "But you've got a new calling and it's a calling we support." Whether he gets a call telling him he's been elected to the Pro Foot- ball Hall of Fame, Willis seemed at peace with his legacy, which he said he built by approaching every season as if he had to play at a Hall-of-Fame level. "In my head, I'm al- ready a Hall of Famer," Willis said. "Today, this closure, this chapter to me feels like a Hall of Fame- like environment. So if the Hall of Fame is anything more than this and I get to be a part of it, then hooray. If not, this has been truly amazing." Former 49ers defensive back Ronnie Lott believes Willis belongs enshrined alongside him in Canton, Ohio. "It's plays like I saw that allow you to earn that. I saw a lot of those plays with that young man mak- ing over the years," Lott told 49ers flagship station KNBR 680-AM. "He has the opportunity to get that because he showed he can do it. We'll let other peo- ple decide that, because those writers and people who look at it, will have their point of view. I will say that he has that." Willis FROM PAGE 1 By Jerry McDonald BayAreaNewsGroup ALAMEDA There was no big splash from the Oak- land Raiders on Tuesday as the free agent period began, although that could change if they were able to sign Dallas running back DeMarco Murray. According to several me- dia outlets, Murray was vis- iting with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday night, with the Raiders, Philadel- phia Eagles and Cowboys also in pursuit of the NFL's leading rusher. The Raiders report- edly reached agreement with linebacker Malcolm Smith of the Seattle Se- ahawks, the Most Valu- able Player of Super Bowl XLVIII, blocking tight end Lee Smith from the Buffalo Bills and running back Roy Helu, a running back from the Washington Redskins who played in high school at Danville's San Ramon Valley High. Those deals were re- ported by ESPN and not confirmed by the Raid- ers, nor was Monday's re- ported five-year, $44.5 mil- lion deal with Chiefs center Rodney Hudson. The Raiders aren't ex- pected to confirm any deals until the players have actually signed contracts and passed a physical ex- amination. Murray was the NFL's leading rusher in 2014 with 1,845 yards on 392 carries and would likely carry an annual salary of $9 million or more. Smith played a reserve role last season for Seattle with linebackers Bruce Ir- vin, K.J. Wright and Bobby Wagner all healthy. Under- sized at 6-foot, 226 pounds, Smith was a seventh-round draft pick out of USC who made a name for him- self on the game's biggest stage. In the Super Bowl fol- lowing the 2013 season, Smith intercepted a Pey- ton Manning pass and re- turned it 69 yards for a touchdown and also recov- ered a fumble in a 43-8 Su- per Bowl win over the Den- ver Broncos. A week earlier, Smith intercepted a de- flected pass broken up by Richard Sherman to seal a championship game win over the 49ers. Smith, who played for Raiders defensive coordi- nator Ken Norton Jr. in Seattle and at USC, is ex- pected to compete in the middle with last year's starter Miles Burris. Bur- ris moved from weak side to middle linebacker when starter Nick Roach had a concussion. Roach, still experiencing concussion symptoms, was waived before the start of free agency. Lee Smith, at 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, played in 56 games with 34 starts in four seasons, catching 20 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Smith's role was primarily as a blocker and he would pair nicely with Mychael Ri- vera, whose strength is as a receiver. NFL FREE AGENCY Raiders sign 3 more players Add linebacker Smith from Seattle, plus tight end, back the spring after an 0-for-10 start. Brandon Crawford, limited to DH because of a sore shoulder, is 1 for 13. Nori Aoki, the new leadoff man, is 1 for 12 with a bunt single. The Giants would like non-roster invitee Justin Maxwell, who hit 18 homers in 315 at-bats for the Hous- ton Astros in 2012, to show something this spring and seize the right-handed por- tion of a platoon in left field with Gregor Blanco. Max- well's two-run single Tues- day was his first hit of the spring, too. He's 1 for 12. "It's probably good for his confidence," Bochy said. "He's trying to make an im- pression. Getting a hit and a couple RBIs is something to feel good about." The Giants entered the spring believing they were set to weather the power loss after Michael Morse and Pablo Sandoval de- parted, just as they were in 2012 when they won the World Series despite hit- ting the fewest longballs in the majors. But the Pence injury affects them in more ways than one. They can't just run Buster Posey into the ground in April. He'll need his days off, too. And on those days, the lineup won't look too threaten- ing, will it? The Padres, meanwhile, overhauled their lineup with right-handed power. They'll also move in the left field fences by nearly 3 feet while lowering the wall from 8 feet to 7. "One swing can get them in the ballgame," said left- hander Javier Lopez, who retired two of four batters but kept the ball in the park in his spring debut. "They have the kind of bats now that can change the game quickly. It's going to be a fun 19 games with them." More fun, they hope, than Tuesday's exhibition. Yusmeiro Petit gave up two homers.
