4A Daily News – Tuesday, November 15, 2011 Ruling on Obama health law likely by election WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday promised an extra- ordinarily thorough spring- time review of President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul — more than five hours of argument, unprecedented in modern times — in time for a likely ruling affecting mil- lions of Americans just before the presidential elec- tion. That ruling, expected before next summer's Inde- pendence Day holiday, could determine the fate of Obama's signature domestic achievement, the most far reaching domestic legisla- tion in a generation but a political lightning rod as well. It is vigorously opposed by all of Obama's prospective GOP oppo- nents. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act aims to provide health insur- ance to more than 30 million previously uninsured Amer- icans. But Republicans have branded the law unconstitu- tional since before Obama signed it in a ceremony in March 2010. The court's ruling could be its most significant and political decision since George W. Bush's 2000 presidential election victory. Legal experts have WORLD BRIEFING In turn, Cain's attorney, Lin Wood, insisted that his client ''doesn't recall Ms. Bialek.'' offered a range of opinions about what the high court might do. Many prominent Supreme Court lawyers believe the law will be upheld by a lopsided vote, with Republican and Demo- cratic appointees ruling in its favor. But others predict a close outcome, with Justice Anthony Kennedy, a Repub- lican appointee who some- times joins his four col- leagues appointed by Democratic presidents, holding the deciding vote on the nine-member court. Cain accuser's boyfriend says they all met SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Sharon Bialek's former boyfriend said Mon- day the then-couple spent an evening with Herman Cain in the 1990s. That countered the GOP presidential candi- date's earlier statements that he never met the woman who has accused him of inappropriate sexual behav- ior more than a decade ago. ''Sharon indeed did meet and spend time with Mr. Cain,'' Victor Jay Zucker- man said. Hours after Zuckerman stepped forward to give his account, Cain's wife — Gloria — was defending her husband in a television inter- view as turmoil over allega- tions of sexual impropriety stretched into a third week. Questions about the Georgia businessman's behavior while he led the National Restaurant Associ- ation more than a decade ago have dogged his cam- paign for the GOP nomina- tion and sent his poll num- bers slipping seven weeks before the leadoff caucuses in Iowa. Cain has denied wrongdoing and vowed to stay in the presidential race. But he also has been unable to put the controver- sy behind him. Zuckerman, a Louisiana pediatrician, corroborated some of Bialek's story — with attorney Gloria Allred at his side — just as the firestorm around Cain seemed to be subsiding since the first disclosures on Oct. 30 rocked Cain's cam- paign. There hadn't been any new information dis- closed in the past week about Cain or the accusa- tions, and plans for a joint news conference by his accusers seemed increasing- ly unlikely. A week ago, Cain said he didn't remember Bialek and had never seen her until she went public with allegations that Cain groped her when LINDA M. A proposal for $300 billion in higher taxes has stirred grumbling within the ranks of congressional Republicans, for whom opposition to such mea- sures has been political bedrock for more than two decades. One prominent conser- vative, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, said in a published commentary during the day that ''our economy will have an even tougher time catching its balance if Washington'' raises taxes. Separately, officials said that Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who outlined the plan last week in a closed- door meeting of four Republicans and three Democrats, has encoun- M-F 6am-2pm * Rosser's Bakery & Specialty Foods Now on Facebook Will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday Thurs. 11/24 & Fri 11/25 Milling Wheat into Flour Made with Organic & Local Ingredients 446 Antelope Blvd. #38 Left side of Antelope Holiday Mkt 529-1687 384-1563 WE ACCEPT FOOD STAMPS NO CARDS REQUIRED FOR EVERYDAY LOW PRICING OR SALE ITEMS FREE TURKEYS! '' There's been a little bit, but it's been pretty muted,'' his spokes- woman, Nachama Solove- ichik, said of the response. Cantor's spokeswoman turned aside several emailed requests for the majority leader's views on the proposal. She said he hadn't seen the plan, and she referred to his com- ments at a news confer- ence earlier in the day when he told reporters, ''I'm not going to be opin- ing as to any reports, hypotheticals or anything connected with their work.''
