The product is the UADefend- er Chin Straps. The chin straps were sold in white and black, red, midnight, navy and royal and have a hard nylon shell, a padded chin area and a plastic strap with "Under Armour" printed on it. The chin straps have metal clasps that tight- en the straps and attach them to the helmet. They were solid in sporting good stores, Under Armour outlet stores and online from January 2008 through September 2011 for around $20. The metal snap poses a lacera- tion hazard when the user's snap comes into contact with another player. Consumers should immediate- ly stop using the straps and contact Under Armour for a free replace- ment. (AP) — Just because Joe Paterno is gone doesn't mean the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State is over. The Nittany Lions start- ed life without the 84- year-old Paterno on Thurs- day, introducing interim coach Tom Bradley while the board of trustees was just beginning its formal investigation. ''We're obviously in a very unprecedented situa- tion,'' said Bradley, who was Paterno's lead assis- tant for the last 11 seasons. ''I have to find a way to restore the confidence.'' Many questions remained unanswered — from how much Paterno actually knew to whether there will be any repercus- sions for assistant coach Mike McQueary, who told Paterno but not police about seeing former assis- tant coach Jerry Sandusky in a shower with a young boy in 2002. The campus was calm Thursday, after thousands of angry students paraded through the streets, some throwing rocks and bottles and tipping over a televi- sion news van. The school said Thurs- day night that there had been ''multiple threats'' against McQueary, now the team's receivers coach, and he would not attend Saturday's home finale against Nebraska ''in the best interest of all.'' Paterno was fired Wednesday night, effec- tive immediately, just hours after the coach had announced that he would retire at the end of the sea- son. Gov. Tom Corbett arrived Thursday in advance of Friday's previ- ously scheduled trustees meeting and told reporters that he supported the deci- sion to oust college foot- ball's winningest coach and university President Graham Spanier because they didn't do enough to alert law enforcement authorities. ''Their actions caused Sports SAN DIEGO (AP) — Carson Palmer threw two touchdown passes and Michael Bush ran 30 times for a season-high 157 yards and one touchdown to lead the Oakland Raiders to a 24-17 win over San Diego on Thursday night, the Chargers' fourth straight loss. The Raiders (5-4) broke a two-game losing streak and took a half-game lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West. Palmer looked much better in making his second start and third appearance since being acquired in a trade with Cincin- nati, throwing touchdown pass- es of 33 and 26 yards to Denar- ius Moore. He'd been semi- retired and living in Del Mar, just north of San Diego, before being traded. Palmer was 14 for 1B Friday November 11, 2011 Palmer leads Raiders to win over Bolts 20 for 299 yards, with one inter- ception. The Chargers (4-5) looked dismal most of the night and lost left tackle Marcus McNeill, right guard Louis Vasquez and linebacker Takeo Spikes to injuries. 49ers, Smith winning without big passing game SANTA CLARA (AP) — Alex Smith and the San Fran- cisco 49ers have been able to sneak by six straight oppo- nents without throwing the ball much or taking chances down field. This week might be different. With Eli Manning and the New York Giants (6-2) com- ing to Candlestick Park on Sunday, points could pile up fast facing the kind of passing offense and quarterback the 49ers (7-1) haven't seen in recent weeks. San Francisco might finally have to open up its 30th- ranked passing offense, which is gaining only 173.5 yards per game. That means Smith could have to throw more and play more like an elite quarterback and not just a game manager. Whether or not Smith can do that is still a mystery. Smith averages fewer than 26 pass attempts per game. When he has thrown more than 35 passes in a game, his record is 1-10, with the lone win coming against Jack- sonville in 2009 when he threw 41 passes. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman said the 49ers could MCT photo Gov. Tom Corbett speaks to the media at the Penn Stater on Thursday in State College, Penn. Corbett called for calm on the Penn State Univer- sity campus in the wake of a sex scandal that has rocked the football program. me to not have confidence in their ability to continue to lead,'' said Corbett, who is on the board. Sandusky, Paterno's former assistant and one- time heir apparent, has been charged with molest- ing eight boys over 15 years. In the week since the state grand jury released its report, athletic director Tim Curley has taken administrative leave and vice president Gary Schultz has retired. ''Certainly every Penn- sylvanian who has any knowledge of this case, who has read the grand jury report, feels a sense of regret and a sorrow to also see careers end,'' Corbett said. ''But we must keep in mind that when it comes to the safety of children, there can be no margin of error, no hesitation to act.'' It was a hurried process. ''We do not yet know all the facts and there are many details that have to be worked out,'' board vice chair John Surma in announcing the firings of Paterno and Spanier, one of the nation's longest- serving college presidents. He said ''change was necessary'' and added: ''To allow this process to continue was going to be damaging to the universi- ty.'' ''We handled it the best way we could with the information we had and with the time that was available to us,'' he added. ''We were wanting to be decisive, but also wanting to be thorough.'' Paterno is not a target of the criminal investiga- tion, having fulfilled his legal requirement by reporting what McQueary told him to Curley and Schultz. But the state police commissioner called Paterno's failure to contact police or follow up on the incident a lapse in ''moral responsibility.'' Paterno has acknowl- edged that he should have done more but has not said why he didn't go to the police, nor has he said See GONE, page 2B Gerber Rams undefeated Gonzalez Jorge Garcia received an honorable mention. Of course, that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what the Gerber Rams, both as a team and individually, accomplished during the soccer season. They learned how to work together as a team and achieved their goal. The Ger- ber Rams are (from back left): Hector Rodriguez, Ricardo Ramirez, Fernan- do Barajas, Jose Hernandez, Jose David Muniz, Noe Espinoza, Brenden Martin, Jarred Costa, Adrian Madera, Felipe Martinez, Erick Hernandez, Julio Lugo and Raul Cervantes. ''most definitely'' win with Smith throwing 40 passes, a standard number for some of the NFL's most prolific quar- terbacks. ''I think he plays the quarterback position at an elite level,'' Roman said Thursday. ''I think he's demonstrated that this year leading his team to a 7-1 record thus far. Alex does a lot of things very well. He's a very tough guy and he doesn't talk about it — those are the guys you have to worry about, the guys that don't talk a big game but show up and get it done.'' Smith. This has been a new year and another new offense for After several disappointing seasons for the 2005 No. 1 overall pick out of Utah, Smith has turned boos into cheers at Candlestick. While his passing performances are rela- tively modest behind a stout running game led by Frank Gore, Smith has avoided the costly mistakes that sent the Niners spiraling in seasons past. He has thrown 10 touchdowns and two interceptions, which are tied for the lowest in the NFL with Donovan McNabb — who has become a backup in Minnesota. Not to mention staying firm in the pocket and avoiding fumbles. ''I do think it is a skill,'' Smith said. ''It's tough to always practice in the true sense of the word, but I think there are things you can do. You look at the quarterbacks that have been the best at it across the board. Tom Brady sticks out in my mind. The guy takes a lot of pride in that, holding onto the football in the pocket and has been great at it for his whole career.'' What Smith hasn't shown yet this season is in an elite arm. He averages about 7 yards per pass attempt, which ranks 16th in the NFL, dinking and dunking passes in coach Jim Harbaugh's version of the West Coast offense. Smith also is throwing for about 183 yards per game, which is 31st in the league. But he has the passer rating (97.3) and the record (7-1) of a winning quarterback this year. ''The only stat that matters is winning,'' Roman said. ''Everything else is statistical analysis and information gath- ering. Whatever we need to do to win we'll do, and if it's throwing it, if it's running it, whatever that equation is on a week-to-week basis, we'll do. Everything else really is water cooler talk.'' Pat Burrell acknowledges his career likely over SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pat Burrell's baseball career is likely over because of a troublesome right foot that hasn't healed and limited him this year for the Giants. While Burrell said late in the season that he would contemplate retirement if he couldn't return to full strength, he now says that's probably the direction he is headed this winter — though he has yet to make a final decision. ''I have not decided yet, but I don't think I can play anymore,'' Burrell said. ''It hurts me to say that.'' Burrell played in only 92 games this past season, The 35-year-old Burrell joined the Giants last year after being cut by Tampa Bay, one of those castoffs and misfits who defined the franchise during its first World Series championship since moving West from New York in 1958. The No. 1 overall draft pick by the Phillies in 1998 out of Miami, Burrell is a career .253 hitter with 292 home runs and 976 RBIs in 1,640 games over 12 seasons with Philadelphia, the Rays and San Francisco. He grew up in the Bay Area in San Jose. On the last day of the season, a 6-3 loss to Colorado at AT&T Park, Burrell fought tears after running in from left field to a standing ovation before the start of the sev- enth inning — manager Bruce Bochy's way of honoring the veteran in what might have been his final game. An emotional Burrell hugged and high-fived his teammates and came back out of the dugout for a curtain call, wav- ing to the fans. Burrell was placed on the disabled list on July 15 with a mid-right foot strain and didn't play again until Aug. 31, though he was still in pain after missing 43 games. He remains loyal to the Giants for giving him a sec- ond chance.
