BETA TIDINGS A PUBLICATION OF BETA SIGMA PSI AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2015 ALUMNI CHAPTER PROUD TO PRESENT HINGST SCHOLARS PROGRAM Educational Funds Help Lead to Successful Recruitment T he year 2015 is shaping up to be a very exciting time for Beta Sigma Psi at Purdue. I'd like to thank you for your generous donations in support of our One Brick at a Time campaign. The renovations we have done over the past three years were a direct result of the generosity of our alumni. We have one of the best chapter houses at Purdue. I am also proud to report that our investment in our Chapter House has paid off. Last fall, the undergraduates recruited 15 new associate members! We didn't just have an increase in quantity either; of the 15 new associate members, 10 of them have GPAs higher than a 3.1 and two of them made the Dean's List for their programs. A big part of this success was because of the renewed focus on scholastics. As one of the Three S's that guide our mission, scholastic achievement has always been an important goal for our members. I'm proud to report that this year the Chapter was able to take that purpose to a new level. Thanks to donations toward our educational fund, the Alumni Chapter provided scholarships for a program we are calling the Beta Sigma Psi Hingst Scholars Program (HSP). The active Chapter, working with alumni, faculty, and pastoral advisors, developed a four-week academic program for freshmen. These freshmen came to the Chapter House for dinner once a week and then stayed for seminar sessions that covered study skills, habits for academic success, and what to expect from the courses they were enrolled in. HSP scholars then broke into small groups by majors and were mentored by older students in similar fields. The evening concluded with an invitation to stick around for Bible study with Pastor Herman from University Lutheran Church. I think it is evident from the results that this kickoff to the semester was a huge success. Each HSP scholar who completed the program received a $500 scholarship. Not only did these men end up pledging Beta Sigma Psi, they also proved themselves by excelling academically. Thanks to money raised by Robert F. Hingst '70 and R. Brent Seifert '88, we have started a special fund to continue the program. With your help, we hope that 2015 will surpass our amazing progress of the past year. Please send us information about high school seniors from your congregation who might be attending Purdue next year. Tell them about Beta Sigma Psi and how the Hingst Scholars Program can help them hit the ground running when they come to campus. Fraternally, Adam P.
