Paradise High's Wyatt Wyck- off and John Leal and the rest of the Chico High wrestling pro- gram continued their domination of the Northern Section Masters Wrestling Championships on Sat- urday that they have had since the past few years. In a matter of minutes at the Redding Civic Auditorium, Wyck- off, at 140 pounds, and Leal, at 154, became the third and fourth wrestlers in section history to win Masters titles all four years, joining Chico's Fabian Sando- val (1995-98) and Willows' Brian Alves (2003-06). By then, the Panthers had al- ready wrapped up the team ti- tle with a 32.5-point advantage over second-place Paradise be- fore the finals even started and Chico had a meet-best five final- ists. That meant the program's fourth Masters team champion- ship in seven years and continued a haul that has seen Chico finish first or second at the Masters in the past eight seasons under head coach Keith Rollins and associate head coach Jordan Mathews. Corning's Gavin Nye won the 287 final with an escape 30 sec- onds into the third round, and then his foe, Shasta's Elijah Siaz, was called for stalling late for a 2-0 decision. Nye's coach, Dan Jones, also re- ceived some hardware, named the section coach of the year. Corning finished fourth with 160 points af- ter winning the Division II meet and taking the small-school title at the Joe Rios Memorial tourna- ment in January at Chico High. On Saturday, Jones had a wres- tler in each weight class and nine of them placed. Corning finished with 160 points for fourth place. Sutter had 162 points for third. Josh Shults lost in a true sec- ond-place match to Chico's David Leyva at 147 pounds with a trip to the state finals at stake. Cole Parker, Aiden Nye, Tony Carrillo, Chase Wimer, Devon Hiller and Erik Alvarado metaled for Corning. Wyckoff, a two-time state fi- nalist, pinned Wheatland's Ryan Franken in 3 minutes, 4 sec- onds for his fourth Masters title. He soon received a hug from his grandfather after the landmark victory. Later to conclude the awards presentation, Wyckoff re- ceived the award for the section's most outstanding wrestler. "It's definitely a dream come true," Wyckoff said. "The next step is state, though. I am not done until I win that." Wyckoff is one of 28 section wrestlers โ€” two per weight class โ€” to advance to the state meet, set for Friday and Saturday in Ba- kersfield. Leal, two weight classes above Wyckoff, finished off Las Plumas' Gabe Hindman by major decision, 15-3, to double what had been done in the 57 years of the sport in the section in a single day. "I'm just glad I got this over with, looking forward to the state tournament," said Leal, who had pinned the same foe in 27 sec- onds at the Division I finals, but was more focused on how the Panthers did as a group. The seventh-seeded Corning Cardinals rallied from a dou- ble-digit deficit to upset second- seeded Central Valley 61-59 Fri- day night in the quarterfinals of the Division-IV playoffs. In Redding, fifth-seeded Red Bluff lost a late lead and then were stymied in overtime 65-54 by fourth-seeded Shasta in the first round of the Division-III playoffs. The two-time defending sec- tion champion Cardinals trailed 39-21 at halftime to a Falcons team that had already beat Corn- ing by 21 and 23 points earlier in the season. But in the second half Friday, everything finally started clicking for Corning. They outscored Central Valley 40-20 over the last two quarters and hung on in the final seconds to advance to Wednesday's semi- final. Curry brought the Warriors back from 10 points down with under 4 minutes left to tie it, but couldn't get a final shot off after Jack's jumper. Curry finished with 26 points, 18 in the final period. The No. 2 Gridley Bulldogs downed the top-seeded Cardi- nals, 1-0, to capture the North- ern Section CIF Division II ti- tle Saturday at Corning High School. Gridley's sole, game-winning goal came in the 26th minute, when David Gomez took ad- vantage of Corning error in the backfield and slipped a shot past keeper Luis Luevano. The Cards (18-3-1) came into the section title game with re- markable momentum, having been unbeaten in their last 17 games. But they also faced a familiar foe in Gridley (18-3-2), which upset the Cards in the semifi- nal round just a season ago. Corning, however, did have its chances. In the 52nd minute Eric Figueroa sliced a shot from inside the box with Gridley's keeper off his line, but his at- tempt was blocked by a player who filled in to guard the net. In the final minutes, the Cards staged a sustained at- tack, yielding a flurry of shots but no equalizer. With about a minute left to play, Figueroa bent a corner kick toward goal that forced Gridley's keeper, Ernesto Caudillo, who over- all played a mature game, to punch the ball up and behind the net. When the final whistle blew, it was the boys in blue jumping in celebration, and the Cards picking themselves up from the pitch without a section ti- tle that has proved elusive. The Cards have played in a section championship game three times in the last four sea- sons. In 2012, Corning fell to Las Plumas, 1-0. In 2013, Chico came from behind to beat Corning, 2-1. For the Bulldogs, it was a second chance at a title after falling to Orland last year, and another chance to prove they could come to Corning as the underdogs and leave with a "W."
