2A Daily News – Wednesday, November 9, 2011 Community people&events Siemens - Schroeder wed Follow the leader I have been involved in the sports scene for many years watch- ing my children play on a multitude of teams. I have been involved in dance, drama, clubs, committees, executive boards, fundraising groups and other groups for my children and for myself. Any time you are in a group setting trying to accomplish something that requires a group effort you will need leader- ship to get it done. This is a com- ment about leadership and the type of leadership I feel is most effec- tive. I am the first to admit that there is no way to please all the people all the time; however, there are certain characteristics of leadership that indisputably set good leaders apart from lesser ones. The foremost trait of successful leadership is to lead, not manage them. To lead means to get out in front of and show the way. To lead means to not only have the exper- tise to train or teach, but the stami- na and physical capability to walk the walk you are asking of your team. If you are a coach, be physi- cally fit enough to literally show someone how to do what you want. If you are the boss of a company, be willing and able and often get down and do some of the grunt work that you expect your subordi- nates to do. Another trait of success- ful leadership is having a command of your mouth. How you speak to your team is a measurement of your ability to lead. One of my biggest pet peeves is the notion that degrading your team, telling them they are a disappointment is somehow going to moti- vate them to work harder for you. The military uses tactics like this in basic training, but their leaders have been trained by pro- fessionals to know how to break the spirit and then build it back up into a warrior. Unless you are a retired military leader, you should never use sarcasm, humilia- tion or heated in-the-moment com- ments to make a point. Leadership is a lot like parenting children; the two most important aspects of parenting are to be pre- dictable and consistent. If your team members can trust that you will act with honor, intelligence and forethought in leading them, they will willingly follow where you Faydra Rector You Matter take them. If you allow your mood to swing and dictate how you man- age situations thereby never consis- tently reacting to issues, your team will not trust that you have the stabili- ty to lead them. Leadership isn't about doing as you are told. It is about building a rela- tionship with your team that inspires them because they believe that you believe they are capable. They believe that they are safe under your experience, guid- ance and example. Being a leader isn't merely because you have the best portfolio of experi- ence; it is about having the best temperament, inspiring countenance and ability to walk the walk over talking the talk.
