Los Molinos advances to the quarterfinals where they will travel to Pierce on Thursday. FOOTBALL Thursday 7 p.m. Wheatland Pirates Corning Cardinals #6 Wheatland: 5-5; 1-3, fourth in Butte View #3 Corning: 7-3; 3-1, second in Northern Athletic Previous Meeting The last time Corning won a section championship was also the same year they last played Wheatland. The schools met in the first round of the 2002 playoffs. Corning won 30-8, then headed to Sutter, beat the Huskies and headed off to the title game. If Corning gets past Wheatland this year, they also head to Sutter... Scouting Report Corning quarterback Ryan Holland is such a threat on offense and returning kicks that often his defensive skills get overlooked. They shouldn't be. He's one of the best safeties in the North State and it's that part of his game that will be tested by Wheatland. The Pirates like to sling the ball around. Quarterback Justin Bragg has completed 69-of-146 passes for 1,367 yards and 12 touchdowns. His top target is Haydon Liessman, who has pulled down 32 balls for 766 yards and eight of those touchdowns. While Wheatland likes to pass they also have a quality runner in Tyler Larcom, who is at 990 rushing yards for the season with eight scores. Slowing him down falls onto Dennis Womack and Corning's line of Roy Madrigal, Cody Long, Erik Miranda and Austin Mallon. Those five will also have to supply the push once again for the Cardi- nals' running game. Holland is averaging 10.37 yards per rush and is 15 yards shy of the 1,000 mark. Workhorse J.D. Whited has 836 yards on the season and 12 touchdowns. John Lowe can catch balls out of the backfield and younger brother Thomas Lowe has come on late in the season as a bruising runner. After two years of losing first round home playoff games in D-I, Corn- ing comes into this contest as the favorite. But don't overlook Wheatland's experience. A year ago they were the No. 1 seed in D-II and reached the championship before falling to Lassen. While this Pirates team is down from a year ago, the Cardinals need to stay focused if they are to win their first playoff game since 2005.
