4B Daily News – Wednesday, November 9, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Cain says he won't quit GOP president race SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A defiant Herman Cain declared Tuesday he would not drop his bid for the Republican presidential nomination in the face of allega- tions of inappropriate sexual behavior. ''Ain't gonna happen,'' Cain said at a news conference a day after a fourth woman accused him of unwanted sexual advances. ''We will get through this,'' he added, trying to steady a campaign that has been rocked by the con- troversy for the past 10 days. Cain denied anew that he had ever behaved inappropriately and said the alleged incidents ''they simply didn't happen.'' He said he would be willing to take a lie detector test if he had a good rea- son. Earlier in the day, Cain sought to undercut the credibility of the latest woman whose accusations are threatening his Republican presidential campaign. His chief rival, Mitt Romney, weighed in for the first time, calling the allega- tions ''particularly disturbing.'' Cain said he called the news conference because he wanted to speak directly to the public, accus- ing the media of distorting his response to the allegations. Debt crisis shakes up Europe ROME (AP) — Italian Premier Minister Silvio Berlusconi said for the first time Tuesday that he would resign once parliament approves economic reforms, and Greek politicians said they were close to agreeing on a new govern- ment to lead their country through painful cutbacks. Both governments are under heavy pressure to reassure finan- cial markets that the 17-country eurozone is moving quickly to reduce crippling government debts before those debts break apart the monetary union and plunge the world into a new recession. Berlusconi's promise to resign came during a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano after the premier lost his parliamentary majority during a routine vote ear- lier Tuesday. In a statement, Napolitano's office said Berlus- coni had agreed to step down once the economic reforms have passed parliament. A vote on the mea- sures is planned for next week. Wealthier European countries including Germany and France have already bailed out struggling Greece, Ireland and Portugal, and Greece will get another (euro) 100 billion ($138 billion) of debt relief as soon as it resolves its political crisis. Senior government officials said Greece would get a new prime minister later Tuesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy surrounding the second day of talks between Prime Minister George Papan- dreou and opposition leader Anto- nis Samaras. They hope to reach a power-sharing deal that will pre- vent Greece from going bankrupt. Support for Paterno eroding STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Support for keeping Joe Paterno in his job coaching Penn State football is eroding among the board of trustees, threatening to end the 84-year- old coach's career amid a child sex-abuse scandal involving a former assistant and one-time heir apparent. A person familiar with the trustees' discussions and who used the term ''eroding'' said it was unclear what the conse- quences for Paterno will be and that a decision could be ren- dered before the board meets on Friday. Penn State President Graham Spanier also has lost support among the Board of Trustees, the person said, but again, how much was unclear. Paterno's son, Scott, said his father hasn't spoken with Penn State officials or trustees about stepping down. Addressing reporters outside his father's house, he said Joe Paterno plans to not only coach in Saturday's game against Nebraska, but for the long haul. ''No one has asked Joe to resign,'' Scott Paterno told The Associated Press in a text mes- sage. Mississippi and Kentucky elect governors Voters chose governors in Mis- sissippi and Kentucky on Tuesday, casting ballots that could fore- shadow the public's political mood just two months ahead of the first presidential primary and nearly four years into the worst economic slowdown since the Depression. A wide range of ballot mea- sures was also being decided, including a hotly debated proposal to restore the bargaining rights of Ohio public employees and a Mis- sissippi referendum on whether to define life as beginning at concep- tion. Supporters of the Mississippi measure hope to use it to mount a legal attack on Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court deci- sion that established the right to abortion. In both governors' races, the offices were expected to stay in the hands of incumbent parties, suggesting voters are not ready to abandon their loyalties, despite the nation's economic woes. Still, the contests were being closely watched for any hints going into 2012, when 10 states will elect governors. Faced with deep budget gaps and tea-party pressure to curb spending, Republican governors around the country have sought union-limiting measures through- out the year. In Ohio, voters will decide whether to repeal a new law severely limiting the bargain- ing rights of more than 350,000 teachers, firefighters, police offi- cers and other public employees. Report says some secret Iran experiments are specific to nukes VIENNA (AP) — The U.N. nuclear atomic energy agency said Tuesday for the first time that Iran is suspected of con- ducting secret experiments whose sole purpose is the devel- opment of nuclear arms. The report is the strongest sign yet that Iran seeks to build a nuclear arsenal, despite claims to the contrary. With Israel threatening a military response, the report opens the way for a new confrontation between the West and Iran. In Washington, officials said the report confirms U.S. suspi- cions about the military nature of Iran's program and that the Obama administration is con- sidering pressuring Iran with additional sanctions, if it fails to answer questions posed by the new information.
