4A Daily News – Tuesday, November 8, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Jackson's doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter LOS ANGELES (AP) — Michael Jackson's doctor was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter after a trial that painted him as a reckless caregiver who administered a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic that killed the pop star. The verdict against Dr. Conrad Murray marked the latest chapter in one of pop culture's most shocking tragedies — the death of the King of Pop on the eve of the singer's heavily promot- ed comeback concerts. Members of Jackson's family wept quietly after the verdict was read, and his mother, Katherine Jackson later told The Associated Press, ''I feel better now.'' La Toya Jackson told the AP she was overjoyed. ''Michael was looking over us,'' she said on her way out of the courthouse. Murray sat stone-faced during the verdict and was handcuffed and taken into custody without bail until sentencing on Nov. 29. He appeared calm as officials led him out of the court- room. ''Dr. Murray's reckless conduct in this case poses a demonstrable risk to the safety of the public'' if he remains free on bond, Judge Michael E. Pastor said. District Attorney Steve Cooley said it will be diffi- cult to achieve an appropri- ate sentence for Murray because of a new state prison alignment law that allows early release for peo- ple convicted of nonviolent felonies. He said his office gave the case the same attention it would give a lower profile 8049 Hwy 99E, Los Molinos, CA We Accept EBT "Your Family Supermarket" BLACK CANYON ANGUS BEEF WE FEATURE We appreciate your business - and we show it! Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said the sympathies of prosecutors went out to the Jackson fam- ily who have ''lost not a pop icon but a son and a father.'' Jurors were escorted from the building and not available for comment after the verdict was read. It was unclear whether the jury determined that Murray had administered the fatal dose of propofol while deciding he was responsible for the death of Jackson. Prosecutors had said Murray violated at least 17 separate standards of care, a number of which could have resulted in death. A shriek broke the eerie silence in the packed courtroom when the verdict was read, and the crowd erupted outside the courthouse. Jubilant Jack- son fans cheered and sang ''Beat It'' as they held signs that read ''guilty'' and ''killer.'' Passing motorists honked their horns. The jury deliberated less than nine hours. The Hous- ton cardiologist, 58, faces a sentence of up to four years in prison. He could also lose his medical license. Paterno, others didn't do enough to stop child sex abuse HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Football coach Joe Paterno and other Penn State officials didn't do enough to try to stop suspected sexual abuse of children at the hands of a former assistant football coach, the state police commissioner said Monday. Paterno may have ful- filled his legal requirement to report suspected abuse by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, state police Commissioner Frank Noonan said, ''but some- body has to question about what I would consider the moral requirements for a human being that knows of sexual things that are taking place with a child.'' He added: ''I think you have the moral responsibili- ty, anyone. Not whether you're a football coach or a university president or the guy sweeping the building. Paterno, who recently became the coach with the most wins in Division I foot- ball history, wasn't charged and the grand jury report didn't appear to implicate him in wrongdoing. He has called the criminal charges shocking and troubling. ''If this is true we were all fooled, along with scores of professionals trained in such things, and we grieve for the victims and their families,'' he said in a state- ment Sunday. ''Come clean,'' Sharon Bialek challenged Cain at a news conference in New York at which she described herself as ''a face and a voice'' to support other accusers who have so far remained anonymous. Cain's campaign swiftly denied Bialek's account. ''All allegations of harass- ment against Mr. Cain are completely false,'' it said in a written statement. An upstart in the presidential race, Cain shot to the top of public opinion polls in recent weeks and emerged, however temporarily, as the main conservative chal- lenger to Mitt Romney. Accompanied by her prominent lawyer, Gloria Allred, Bialek accused Cain of making a sexual advance one night in mid-July 1997, when she had travelled to Washington to have dinner with him in hopes he could help her find work. She said the two had fin- ished dinner and were in a car for what she thought was a ride to an office building. ''Instead of going into the offices he suddenly reached over and he put his hand on my leg, under my skirt toward my genitals,'' she said. COMPLETE AUTO REPAIR All makes and models.
