4B Daily News – Tuesday, November 8, 2011 Sen. Johannessen to address local Veterans Retired California Senator Maurice Johannessen will be the guest speaker at Red Bluff's Veterans Appreciation Day scheduled for Nov. 13 at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Senator Johannessen, known throughout the north state as a Veteran's Veteran, has almost single handedly made possi- ble the Northern California Veteran's Cemetery in Igo, the on site non-denominational Chapel and now the Veteran's Home on Knighten Road in Redding. Johannessen has served the public as Redding Mayor, Shasta County Supervisor, California State Senator and also served as Secretary of the California Department of Veterans affairs. In conversation Maurice, a veteran, does not consid- er himself to be a very good politician but all agree that Mau- rice is an exemplary public servant. Veterans Appreciation Day is sponsored by The Down- town Red Bluff Business Association with support from the Los Molinos FFA, The Young Marines, and The Job Center, The Red Bluff Chamber of Commerce and many other groups and individuals. All Veterans will enjoy a complimentary breakfast along with a patriotic program that includes Greg Stevens on the honky-tonk key board, and the Los Molinos FFA will pre- sent colors. Miss Tehama will lead the National Anthem; a musical tribute to all services will be presented by The Young Marines and more. Breakfast is from 8 to 11. Cere- monies begin at 8:30 a.m. Breakfast is complimentary to all veterans and $5 to all others. CalVet joins Applebee's as they thank veterans In what has become an annual tradition, Applebee's will again thank our nation's veterans and troops by inviting them to their neighborhood Applebee's for a free signature entrée on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11. CalVet will work with Applebee's on that day by providing brochures containing information important to veteran families. The brochures, available at all 52 California Applebee's locations on Veter- ans Day, contain a simple, postage-paid form with which veterans and veteran families can request CalVet assistance in getting connected to the state and federal benefits they have earned through military service. "We're grateful to Applebee's for letting us reach out to veterans during their Veterans Day event," said CalVet Sec- retary Peter J. Gravett. "Only a small percentage of eligible California veterans are taking advantage of important bene- fits. CalVet is working to change that. Those benefits and others can help veterans and their families successfully move forward after military life," he said. "We want nothing less for those who served and sacrificed for our country." Guests wanting to take advantage of Applebee's free entrée offer will need to provide proof of service, which includes: U.S. Uniform Services ID Card, U.S. Uniform Ser- vices Retired ID Card, Current Leave and Earnings State- ment, Veterans Organization Card, photograph in uniform or wearing uniform, DD214, Citation or Commendation. Round Table thanks vets Military Family Support Group of Tehama County is holding a fundraiser to support active troops overseas from 5-8 tonight at Round Table Pizza in Red Bluff. I don't want it killed. Answer Sorry, but Department of Fish and Game (DFG) staff will not come out to your house to remove or relocate rat- tlesnakes residing in your yard. However, if you can muster up the courage to deal with it yourself, you will not need a license to kill or trap it. If not, and you have no neighbors, friends or family members willing to help you move the rat- tlesnake, your best option will be to contact a profes- sional pest control service to do it. For the future, here are some helpful hints from DFG Associate Wildlife Biologist Nicole Carion on how to discourage rat- tlesnakes from taking up residence near your home. • Don't let feed from bird feeders overflow and build up on the ground to attract rodents. • Don't allow high rodent populations to occur near your house. Rattle-snakes are great population man- agers for ground squirrels and other rodents, so try to keep their numbers down. • Always be mindful when working in or around wood or rock piles. Don't stack these materials near your house. • Also, for the safety of your pets, remember to keep them indoors, especially at night. Importing excess fish into California Question I live on the California/Oregon border as a resident of California. I have both California and Oregon fishing licenses. My primary fishing is in the surf for redtail perch. Califor- nia's limit for perch is 10 per day. Oregon's limit is 15 per day. If I legally take my Ore- gon limit in the Gold Beach area, is it legal for me to bring them home to Califor- nia? Can I certify the catch as being caught in Oregon at the agriculture check station upon re-entry into Califor- nia? Answer It is legal to import the redtail surfperch taken in Oregon in excess of California's limit of 10, but you cannot take any redtail in California until you have fewer than 10 in your pos- session (that means either consume them or give away the extra). Prior to bringing them into California you will need to fill out a Decla- ration for Entry form. They gibbsautobodydsl@chiconet.com 780 EAST AVE. When a bear threatens public safety Question Someone recently asked what can be done with a nuisance bear that has been vandalizing garbage cans, threatening animals and making every- one nervous. You said they could only shoot the bear if the bear hunting season was open and they had a hunting license and bear tag, or if they had already qualified for a Depredation Permit. Well, what about if the bear gets more aggressive and wants more than a garbage can, and it actually breaks into someone's house? What if it actually goes after their pets or their livestock? What should the owner do, call the DFG or the local Sheriff's Department for help? Answer The bear prob- lem in the previous Q&A concerned a "nuisance bear" that was essentially looking for an easy meal by raiding unsecured garbage cans for discarded human food. The problem you describe, though, is more serious. According to DFG Bear Program Manager Marc Kenyon, if the bear is imme- diately threatening human safety by chasing someone, attacking someone or even entering an occupied dwelling - essentially a "nui- sance bear" that has elevated itself to a "public safety ani- mal" - then the bear can be killed immediately without a tag or permit. Also, if a bear is discovered while in the act of injuring, harassing or killing livestock (includ- ing honeybees, oddly enough) or a pet, then the owner or tenant of the land or property may legally shoot the bear immediately without a tag or permit (Fish and Game Code, section 4181.1). They will then need to report the killing within 24 hours to DFG. However, in any situation where you believe a wild animal is threatening human life or safety, immediately call 911 or your local law enforcement agency. They are equipped to respond to such situations and in many instances can provide a much faster response time. Helicopter fishing Question I saw a man fishing with a remote-con- trolled helicopter and he caught a fish with it. Is this legal or not? AnswerIt is legal as long as the remote-controlled vehicle is used only to move an angler's line around while the angler maintains control of the line attached to the terminal tackle.
