Archaeologists find token of Christian faith JERUSALEM (AP) — A tiny, exquisitely made box found on an excavated street in Jerusalem is a token of Christian faith from 1,400 years ago, Israeli archaeologists said Sunday. The box, carved from the bone of a cow, horse or camel, decorated with a cross on the lid and measuring only 0.8 inches by 0.6 inches (2 centimeter by 1.5 centimeter), was likely carried by a Christian believer around the end of the 6th century A.D, according to Yana Tchekhanovets of the Israel Antiquities Authority, one of the directors of the dig where the box was found. When the lid is removed, the remains of two portraits are still visible in paint and gold leaf. The figures, a man and a woman, are probably Christian saints and possibly Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The box was found in an excavation outside the walls of Jerusalem's Old City in the remains of a Byzantine-era thor- oughfare, she said. Uncovered two years ago, it was treated by preservation experts and extensively researched before it was unveiled at an archaeological conference last week. The box is important in part because it offers the first archaeological evidence that the use of icons in the Byzan- tine period was not limited to church ceremonies, she said. Part 1 of 2 Too many of our Christian broth- ers and sisters have been floundering for years–with hopes and dreams, but they remain stagnant or worse, work- ing hard but feeling like they are only treading water and getting nowhere. God has been showing me that so many of us are still struggling with a flawed and "hole filled" core, a weak and crumbling foundation–because we pick and choose exactly what words of God have value, or not. We pick and choose what instructions from God we shall implement into our life, or not. We do this when clearly the answer to is, "All." All the words of God are true. Do we think that Jesus took time to pick and choose what instructions from the Father were important and which were not, or which ones he would implement or not? Jesus said, "Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." To Jesus, every single word was food for man. Jesus did not pick and choose; he wanted to live by "All." All of the instructions that God gives us are valuable. God desires to give us life, and life more abundantly. The words of God, consummated with our enthusiastic obedience, bring about the building of a solid foundation. Obedience to the living God is the plan. It is the blueprint for a solid foundation, with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. God's children perish for lack of knowledge. Let us not be lacking in knowledge of the truth of God. We are all hopelessly flawed with- Building our foundation on Christ — the Rock These out the grace of Christ. I am not sug- gesting that we in our own abilities can do anything. I am saying that God is pleased with us when we demonstrate our faith in Him. I am saying that obedience to God is the evidence or the fruit of our faith. I am saying that if we walk in His word we will know the truth and the truth will set us free. So let us walk in His way and not our way. Let us obey the leading of the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God. Let us, instead of picking and choosing what to obey, choose to obey everything that God would have us do, however small a thing it may seem. It is still pleasing to God when we obey Him. By the same token, the Bible tells us that disobedi- ence in the small things is rebellion, which is akin to witchcraft. This cer- tainly will leave us not only with a damaged foundation, but walking without the protection of the armor of God. Let us put on Christ and walk in all His ways. So what are these "small" instruc- tions from the Living God that we tend to disregard? These are that we hold dear to our heart and repent of rarely. These are the ones that we make provisions for. Linda Irish GodTalk are the ones that we have allowed to interfere with the building of the foundation of our life in Christ Jesus. These are the ones that Satan uses to snare us and keep us from fully walking in the light. These are a few of the things God tells us to avoid, but there are more that He calls us to embrace. God has given us a hope for a future, and this begins with a solid foundation. God is always ready for us to repent and begin again. The steadfast love of our Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, and they are new every morning. Let us begin to build our founda- tion in earnest. Let us repent of our lack of obedience in all these things and enthusiastically begin again. When we can be faithful in the small things perhaps He will then give us the big things. So when God tells us to do some- thing, do we do it? Not in theory–I mean do we really do it? some that come to my mind. Grumbling, the words of our mouth, neglecting to ponder the thoughts that God would have us dwell on, anger or judgment against our fellow man, (which is to elevate ourselves as higher than they). We all know what they are. They are the ones WE PROJECT OUR FEELINGS ON GOD The Rev. Holly McKissick, Disciples of Christ minis- ter: You cannot serve two masters, for you will love one and hate the other; that's the standard answer _ there is only room in the human heart for one God. There is anoth- er answer, too, a more primitive, honest, genuine answer: We project our thoughts, feelings, politics and opinions onto God. And, our jealousy. There was a pastor the same age as me,but her talents far exceeded mine. She could preach and play piano; she came from a "good family;" she attended the best schools. Underneath my feeling of jealousy was insecurity. I'm not alone. Remember Jacob and Esau wrestling in the womb, the disciples asking Jesus who is the greatest, Mary and Martha arguing over whose job is more important? The word "God" is, at worst, a projection of our smallness and fear. But, it's honest. It's there. It's real. We can't deny it. I see another woman, with wispy white hair, holding a sign, "bread not bombs," across from the nation's Capitol. She is there day after day. She has no need for recognition, power, visibility, position. We long for that, too. It is a part of our primitive core. Linda Marie Irish is a student of the Holy Spirit and author of It's A God Thing...My Sheep Hear My Voice (2nd Edition) soon to be available through Amazon. With her friend, Brenda Ballentine, she is the co-founder of the Tehama County ministry 3 Women With a Mission. This article is the first of two parts. Voices of Faith: Why is God a jealous God? So we name God not as jealous, but as bounty, blessing, love, healing and restoration. We project those desires, too. The more honestly we can name our core, the more honestly we can name God and one another. BECAUSE WE ARE SO IMPORTANT Rabbi Avi Weinstein, head of Jewish studies, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy: God, on the one hand is beyond the scope of human comprehension. His name is ineffable, his essence ultimately unknowable, and yet it is believed that God is personal. When we call upon him, we know he "hears." This paradox is not easily reconciled. How do we proceed in relating emotionally to this great mystery? Our great books give us clues. God gives us lan- guage in order to understand how to relate to him. He teaches us ways to emulate him by being empathetic, compassionate and generous to others, but he also instructs us on how he should be treated. Jealousy is the most powerful of emotions. A jealous person is one who is often declared possessive, one who demands exclusivity. "You are mine and no one else's" declares the jealous party, "and you belong to me." God is no different.
