By MATEO CRISOSTO On Oct. 14-16, the Tehama County Young Marines traveled two hours south to the Marine Corps and Navel Reserve Base in Sacramento for a battalion encmapment. Some of the activities the 18 members of the unit participated in consisted of PFT testing, drill competitions and practicing marching. From the unit, GySgt. Mikayla Erickson competed in platoon drill, Sgt. John Bookout received first place in the squad drill and Sgt. Giancarlo Nandino competed in the guideon drill. PFC. Claudio from Galt was awarded Iron Mike while Sgt. Nathan Medina received the guideon first place award. In their free time the youth had the opportunity to play tug-of- war football and volleyball. For meals, they marched to the chow hall. There were a total of 60 Young Marines from all over Northern California in attendance at the battalion encampment. One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to watch a group of World War II reenactors. The reenactors each chose a real World War II veteran to por- tray. They showed the weapons and other equipment used throughout the war.
