The Lady Cardinals were playing on the back of their heels for most of the second half, until Damian booted for- ward a perfectly angled chip that floated past Yreka keeper Alicia Mandt and into the back of the net. "I just went for it," said Da- mian, who added even after she scored she still couldn't believe the ball went in. It came at the right time for Corning and against the run of play. Yreka had multiple attempts to take the lead themselves in the second half. A minute prior to Damian's dream goal Yreka's Rebekah Kimball put a tad too much on a similar shot of her own that just floated over the cross bar. Corning had jumped on Yreka early when the Lady Miners de- fense misplayed a through ball right on the outskirts of the pen- alty box in the fourth minute. Corning's Anissa Munoz ran on to the mistake then beat Mandt, who was off her line, with a shot to the top shelf. Corning continued to control play for the much of the first half, but the momentum turned in Yreka's favor in the 25th min- ute. Yreka was given what seemed like an ordinary free kick from around the midfield line, but the Miners played a perfect set piece. Kendall Nielsen took off just as Kara Jackson launched the free kick and beat the Corning defense and the keeper to tie the game at 1-1. However, Corning keeper Norma Madera would make her presence known later in the game, recording a pair of game-winning saves immedi- ately to allow Damian's goal to stand up. Next up for the Lady Cardi- nals (10-8-4) is a road trip to top-seeded Sutter (14-5-2) on Tuesday in the semifinals. Sutter survived a scare Thurs- day as eighth seeded Wheatland held them to a 0-0 tie through regulation. Sutter came through in over- time with a 4-0 win. Sutter knocked Corning out of last year's playoffs. Apparently, the Pan- thers had the Eagles right where they wanted to be. Steve Dean answered with an equalizer on a Jack Chinchay assist in the next minute, the two connected again for the game-winner in the 69th minute and sweeper Ari Naiman had the play of the game, flicking the ball away on a would-be West Valley goal, leading Chico to a 2-1 victory in the Northern Section Divi- sion I quarterfinals. "I always joke with the boys that if we were down 1-0, we play better," Panthers coach Ryan Flenner said. "That's the kind of attitude the boys have is that they can come back from anything. "The boys like the pressure," he added. Perhaps no one more than Naiman, who nailed his sliding flick as the Eagles appeared to have a surefire, go-ahead goal again. "One way or another it was the tipping point for us or them," Flenner said. Hendrick Motorsports swept the Daytona 500 qualifying races, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie John- son winning their respective duel. The Earnhardt and Johnson wins were anticlimactic, with the drama saved for Danica Patrick's desperate bid to make Sunday's opening race. Her second incident with Denny Hamlin in two days led to a frantic effort by her Stewart- Haas Racing crew to make rapid repairs for her to have a shot at making the 500. She restarted 18th with two laps to go and was pushed all the way around Day- tona International Speedway by teammate Kurt Busch to finish 10th. It was good enough for her to make the field — Patrick had to finish inside the top 15 of the sec- ond duel — but any joy was im- mediately lost as she confronted Hamlin on pit road. An incident between the two in Wednesday's practice sent Pat- rick to her backup car, and she felt Hamlin had spun her Thurs- day night. By Antonio Gonzalez The Associated Press The Washington Wizards wanted a stronger, quicker guard backing up All-Star John Wall. The Sacramento Kings were searching for a savvy reserve to provide leadership. And a few hours before the NBA trade deadline, they found a way to meet each other's needs. The Wizards acquired Ramon Sessions from the Kings for An- dre Miller on Thursday, a minor move both teams hope pays off big this season. "Ramon is a proven veteran who will bring an up-tempo style to our second unit and give us quickness, energy and defensive presence," Wizards President Er- nie Grunfeld said. "He can make plays for himself as well as others and will help to solidify our bench as we head into the final 28 games of the season and the playoffs." The 28-year-old Sessions has struggled in Sacramento, averag- ing 5.4 points, 2.7 assists and 17.8 minutes for a team that is on its third coach this season.
