ByDonThompson TheAssociatedPress SACRAMENTO Shortly after 2 a.m. on April 6, 2010, a guard at Salinas Valley State Prison no- ticed Alan Ager's cellmate trying to stuff something under a mat- tress. It was Ager, blood trickling from his mouth and a cloth noose tied around his neck. The convicted child molester died 10 days later without regain- ing consciousness, his death earn- ing his cellmate a second life sen- tence. California state prisoners are killed at a rate that is double the national average — and sex of- fenders like Ager account for a disproportionate number of vic- tims, according to an Associated Press analysis of corrections re- cords. INMATE HOMICIDE Manysex offenders ki ll ed i n state prisons The Associated Press SACRAMENTO The state is drawing criticism from taxpayer groups for buying California's top elected officials new hybrid cars while many ordinary residents still struggle financially. The 20 cars recently purchased — many of them 2015 Ford Fu- sion Hybrids — are for use by state senators while they are in Sacramento, The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. Eight of the cars cost nearly $24,000 each, and they replace some fleet cars driven just 12,400 miles, the newspaper reported. "The excesses and absurdities never seem to end with govern- ment," said Lew Uhler, president of the California-based National Tax Limitation Committee. "Infu- riation never ends with the way that they operate." LAWMAKERS Taxpayers critical of California for buying new cars By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter RED BLUFF Local law enforce- ment responded with a SWAT team to a Delphinium Street resi- dence Monday afternoon, but left hours later with no arrests made from an incident investigators be- lieve may have been caused by a false police report. The situation started around 12:24 p.m. when the Red Bluff Police Department's dispatch re- ceived a telephone call on the business line by a caller named "Joe" that said he had stabbed someone at 1185 Delphinium Street and was holding the rest of the family. The caller told dispatch if the police were called, he would shoot the officers an claimed to have a shotgun, according to a de- partment press release. Officers arrived at the address, a four-plex apartment building, and evacuated residents from the other residences for their safety. The residents reported no un- usual activity from the apart- ment in question. Due to the initial call to dis- patch and what the department described as an "apparent lack of cooperation" from the residence in question, the Red Bluff Police Department initiated an inter- agency SWAT team response. Units from the Tehama County Sheriff's Department, Corn- ing Police Department, Califor- nia Highway Patrol and narcot- ics taskforce arrived on scene as an area around the apartment complex was taped off for sev- eral hours. A SWAT team negotiator was eventually able to contact a res- ident inside the apartment by telephone with a plan initiated to safely take the occupants out of the house with the exception of an elderly woman inside. SWAT officers cleared the apartment, but did not discover any injured persons or evidence of a shotgun inside. Red Bluff Police investigators interviewed the two adult male residents and their mother. Investigators believe the resi- dents were the victims of a false police report. At of 8 p.m. Monday there are no criminal charges pending.
