Mickenzie Perdue and Sofia Frantz finished in a tie for fourth at the NSCIF Girls Golf Champi- onships, Monday, held at Wilcox Oaks Golf Club. The pair qualified for next week's Northern California High School Girls Golf Championships in Stanford. The Lady Spartans, who finished the regular season in fifth place in the Eastern Athletic League, took third overall at the section champi- onships. Pleasant Valley won the section title. Chico placed second. Tomasetti. won the individual section title by firing a 97. Perdue and Frantz each had 108s on their home course. Madison Shea shot a 131, Kellie Rodriguez 141, Summer Frantz 142 and Michelle Mitchell 172 to round out the Lady Spartans. Sofia Frantz qualified for the NorCal Championships as a fresh- man. She said Monday's round was more stressful than the average EAL round because of the competi- tion. Perdue, a junior, said she wanted to play golf last year and was glad a team was finally formed. She's also happy to be making the trip to Stanford with Frantz. "I didn't want to do it alone," she said. While Frantz and Perdue were all smiles following the award pre- sentation, so was their coach Elena After directing the boys team to their first divisional title in decades, starting a program from scratch was a different challenge. "I had always been told from the time I started coaching the boys that there weren't enough girls interest- ed in playing golf," she said. "There was part of me which didn't believe that." Tomasetti's instincts proved to be right with 12 girls making up this year's roster. Keeping a program going is another challenge, but successes like that found Monday is key. "It's really important because I think other girls will see and say 'hey we have a team and it's a suc- cessful one,'" Tomasetti said. "I saw that with the boys. I saw more and more wanting to be a part of the pro- gram once they saw the program having success." That's the spirit 1B Tuesday November 1, 2011 Lady Cards wrap hockey season FIELD HOCKEY Despite losing to Bella Vista in the playoffs, the Lady Cardinals' field hockey team concluded a suc- cessful season over the weekend. Karlie Jennings and Savanah Miller also scored for Corning. The Cardinals then beat rival Chico 1-0 as Raylee Sutfin scored around a minute into the game on a short corner from Jennings. Terras led Corning with nine shots at the tournament and Kaitlyn Huntley made 20 saves in net. "It was a great season, very rewarding to go to the post season tourney and beat Chico," coach Teresa Lamb said. Julia Van Doorn had a terrific season leading the Cardinals' defense.
