LocksCreek's Tax Woes:
The Price of Doing Business
Dear Editor:
I read Bill Bowman's article
in Up & Coming Weekly about
Campbellton's tax situation.
I was a little surprised to read
what you had to
say concerning
Mr. Summers
problem, and
the dreaded Tax
Police. It seems
to me that each
time a customer
comes in to a
small business
or any business
and receives a
service, an item,
or whatever,
sales tax is
figured into
the sale.
That money
was given to the business to pay
for the sales tax on the service
rendered and really belongs to the
state of North Carolina and not to
the business. These funds are not
operating funds to be used for any
other purpose other than paying
the state.
I would have to say that anyone
who fails to turn those funds over to
the state is really a thief and should
pay the consequences.
I am sure that
Mr. Summers must be
relieved to know that
the state is not going to
file formal tax evasion
charges against him.
These are just my
thoughts but I am sure
many small business
owners do without
certain things to make
sure that Uncle Sam gets
what is his first and if
someone has to go short
let it be the owner. I
would appreciate your
comments on
this matter.
