6A Daily News – Saturday, October 29, 2011 Sheriff's Office prepares for quake safety during ShakeOut The Tehama County Sheriff's Office partici- pated in the Great Cali- fornia ShakeOut on Oct. 20. Sheriff's personnel did their part by playing the Great California ShakeOut audio drill with sound effects off of www.shakeout.org. At exactly 10:20 a.m. sheriff's personnel and people throughout the State of California dropped to their knees, took cover under their desk, and held on as instructed by the audio drill. While the potential earthquake hazards depend upon were you live in California, the state is considered at higher risk compared to the rest of the country. Safety personnel believe that California can become much more prepared for earth- quakes- and be ready to recover quickly. The ShakeOut has been creat- ed to help people and organizations get better prepared for major earth- quakes, and practice how to be protected when they happen. A group of 8.6 million people throughout Cali- fornia participated in the Great California Shake- Out. Great ShakeOut tips What to do immedi- ately when shaking begins: • In MOST situations, you will reduce your chance of injury if you DROP down onto your hands and knees (before the earthquake knocks you down). This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary. • COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter near- by, only then should you get down near an interior wall (or next to low- lying furniture that won't fall on you), and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. • HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shak- ing stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around. More information is available at www.drop- coverholdon.org.
