"California is experiencing a large outbreak of measles, with 99 confirmed cases in the state so far," according to a news release issued by the agency. "There are no confirmed cases of measles in Tehama County; a suspected case earlier in the week tested negative for the disease." The measles outbreak in the state has sparked a national dis- cussion over the safety of vaccines and the "personal beliefs" exemp- tions for parents who don't want their children to be vaccinated. The measles vaccine, "which is given in combination with mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) is ef- fective and safe," according to the release. "Two doses are rec- ommended for children, with the first given at 1 year of age and the second between ages 4 and 6." The Health Services Agency recommends that parents immu- nize their children if they have not received the MMR vaccine or have only received one dose. In the 2014-2015 year, 4.15 per- cent of Tehama County's chil- dren entering kindergarten had personal beliefs exemptions, ac- cording to data from the Califor- nia Department of Public Health. That amounts to 41 students. About 93 percent of kindergar- ten students entering school in the county were "adequately im- munized," according to the data.
