editors' corner A Season for Shopping & Sharing T hree things come to mind when I think of Thanksgiving: Food (followed by more food), Black Friday sale shopping and relaxing with family, friends and neighbors at Fayetteville's annual A Dickens Holiday festival downtown. All three — and much more — are in this issue of CityView. We hope that the stories and pic- tures in this issue will help you plan your own turkey day meal, give you ideas to kickstart your holiday shop- ping and inspire you to get out and enjoy all the wonderful activities our community has to offer this holiday season. The best way to get into the giving and Thanksgiving spirit in Fayette- ville, in my opinion, is to partake in our city's Heroes Homecoming for Vietnam veterans. Those who fought in Vietnam never got the 'thank you' or the 'welcome home' they deserved to hear so many years ago. Let's show them that we are thankful for their service and give them a show of our appreciation during Heroes Home- coming, Nov. 4 — 13. Kelly Twedell, features editor and Rebekah Sanderlin, senior editor A 10 | November/December • 2011 special salute and thanks to our veterans this month, but especially our local Vietnam veterans. We look forward to honoring you at this month's celebration. What do you get when you pit elite military, extreme sports and law enforcement operatives against one another? The Discovery Channel's hit show, "One Man Army." I had the chance to sit down with the winner, Lt. Mike Ruff, of episode 6 as he shares his experience. Rebekah and I had fun in our 'test kitchen' toying with an alternative to the tra- ditional Thanksgiving meal if you do not have a houseful to cook for. Thanksgiving weekend and shopping go hand in hand and we have put together a fun gift guide featuring some bling-bling from some local area jewelry shops and boutiques. Every year Fayetteville partakes in some traditional holiday shows. Melissa went behind the scenes of the Dickens Festival and Bhairavi fills us in on the annual Heart of Christmas show. That's not even counting the Fayetteville Symphony Or- chestra or CFRT's "Best Christmas Pageant Ever."
