SOCCER Co rn in g bo ys score 11 for 2nd straight game By Steve Megargee TheAssociatedPress On a day when the new faces of college football made their school choices official, some familiar names finished atop the team re- cruiting standings. Here's a look at some of the no- table events on a day that revealed the drama doesn't necessarily end after a recruit makes a nationally televised announcement. Duelatthetop Which school fared the best? It depends on which recruiting ser- vice you follow. Southern Califor- nia topped the Rivals and Scout team recruiting rankings as of 6 p.m., while Alabama led the ESPN and 247Sports standings. USC's rise is noteworthy because this marked the first year it could sign a full class since coming off probation. "It's a Pete Carroll type of class," said Mike Farrell, a na- tional recruiting analyst for Ri- vals. "Now they've just got to put it together on the field." It came as no surprise that these two schools led the way, as evidenced by Ri- vals' annual rankings. Alabama topped the Rivals rankings from 2008-09 and from 2011-14, while Southern California finished first from 2004-06 and in 2010. The only school other than USC or Al- abama to top the Rivals rankings since 2004 is Florida in 2007. Big day in LA USC wasn't the only Los An- geles-area school with reason to celebrate. UCLA soared up the team standings Wednesday by getting late commitments from some top prospects, including tight end Chris Clark, running back Soso Jamabo, offensive line- man Josh Wariboko, safety Na- than Meadors and wide receiver Cordell Broadus (the son of rap- per Snoop Dogg). In the process, UCLA showed its ability to recruit nationally. Clark is from Connect- icut, Wariboko from Oklahoma and Jamabo from Texas. "They had some guys that a lot of peo- ple predicted might stay closer to home," Farrell said. Keeping up the suspense In nationally televised an- nouncements Wednesday morn- ing, defensive end Byron Cowart selected Auburn and linebacker Roquan Smith declared he was going to UCLA. GIRLS BASKETBALL Lady Spartans win 4th straight behind Brose's 25 Red Bluff's Daisy Brose had a career-high 25points Tuesday against Paradise. By Jeff Larson jlarson@paradisepost.com @jtlarson on Twitter PARADISE The Red Bluff High boys basketball team nearly put up 90 in a 43-point blowout of Paradise the first time around in Eastern Athletic League play a few weeks ago. The rematch was entirely a different story, at least through about a quarter and a half, as Red Bluff battled early turn- overs and a foreign gym, before eventually establishing itself as the dominant foe again and winning 56-38 over the Bobcats Tuesday night in Paradise. Red Bluff's Joseph Bosetti led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds, while junior Joey Knight added 14 points and a team-high two 3-pointers for the Spartans (13-8, 2-6 Eastern Athletic League). Junior Lane Pritchard provided the second- half spark for Red Bluff, which trailed 10-8 after one quarter and led 23-15 at halftime. The 5-foot-11 junior Pritchard scored 11 points and had a 3 in the sec- ond half. "Whenever you come up to this building it's difficult to get going," Red Bluff coach Stan Twitchell said. "We didn't shoot well and we (were) sloppy han- dling the ball." Red Bluff, which returns home to host Pleasant Valley — a 67-57 loser at Foothill — Fri- day, committed 10 first-quarter turnovers and allowed Paradise (3-18, 0-8) to slip in front, 10-8 on the first of two 3s from senior D.J. Norton in the closing min- utes of the first period. "I credit Paradise every time these guys continue to battle," Twitchell said. "It's really hard when you haven't won a game since December to stay positive. You got to give their coaching staff and the kids a lot of credit ... they come to play every night." Bosetti, who committed two fouls within the first two min- utes of the game, returned in the second to lead a 15-5 quar- ter and get Red Bluff back ahead by eight. The 6-foot-5 Spartan leader hit from all over the floor, in- cluding a clean spin-back lay- up in traffic to give the Spar- tans their biggest lead of the half, 21-12. "I thought Joseph established himself inside for us really well," Twitchell said. Red Bluff maintained the mo- mentum in the third, despite a couple 3s from Luke Otten, in- cluding one from the corner that cut the Paradise deficit to 34-25 with 3 minutes left. But from there, the Spartans doubled up the Bobcats and grabbed their biggest lead at 44-30 going into the fourth quarter. "We didn't play as well as we can play," Paradise coach Jerry Cleek said. "We're capable of playing with those guys and beating them right now and we didn't." Otten led Paradise with 14 points and a game-high four 3s. Norton also had 14 off the bench for Paradise, which is at Chico High Friday night. "I'm telling you these kids can beat any one," Cleek said. "We're playing really good at times, but then all of a sudden we go into periods where we don't (play well), and we got to get rid of those."
