The City Council unanimously voted to direct city staff to adver- tise for applicants for the vacant seat, whose term expires in No- vember 2018. Knox, who was elected last No- vember, submitted his resignation Jan. 26, citing health reasons. The City Council could instead have called for a special election that Tehama County officials esti- mate would cost the city between $15,000 and $20,000. Councilman Rob Schmid said that while it would be in the pub- lic's best interest to elect its own RE D BL UF F Ci ty C ou nc il OK s pla n to fi l l vacant seat Staff reports CORNING» A 16-year-old Flournoy girl was killed Tuesday evening in a single-vehicle crash here. About 6:50 p.m. the girl, whose name was not released, was driv- ing south on Columbia Avenue south of Loleta Avenue at a high rate of speed, according to the California Highway Patrol. After the girl drove over a raised bridge over a creek she lost control of her Ford F-150 pickup, went off the road, struck a power pole and then hit a tree, accord- ing to the CHP. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and her passenger, a 17-year-old Corning girl, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. The CHP said neither drugs nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash. Both girls were said to have been wearing seat belts. The 6-foot, 5-inch, 320-pound Nunez is headed to Colorado State University to play offensive line for new coach Mike Bobo at the highest level of college foot- ball. Clement is headed to Hast- ings College in Nebraska, a Na- tional Association of Intercolle- giate Athletics program, where the 6-foot, 5-inch, 245-pounder is expected to play tight end. Red Bluff High School cele- brated the signings by hosting a ceremony during the school's lunch period to allow for a couple hundred classmates, teammates, coaches, family and friends to share the moment with Nunez and Clement. The flood watch is in ef- fect from Thursday evening through late Friday night, ac- cording to the NWS. About three to six inches of rain is expected in a portion of North- ern California, including in Butte, Lake, Shasta and Te- hama counties. The NWS said rivers and small streams could experi- ence rapid rises along with flooding across low-lying and urban areas. The Tehama County Sher- iff's Office said flooding is pos- sible for the Tehama and Vina- Woodson bridges as well as lo- cal power failures and downed trees. "A tropical moisture plume over the Pacific is moving to- wards Northern California and is expected to bring two waves of wet weather to the region: Thursday into Saturday and Sunday into Monday," accord- ing to the NWS. In addition, wind gusts could reach 50 miles per hour in the valley and 60 miles per hour in the mountains, accord- ing to the NWS. The Tehama County Public Works Department said sand and sand bags will be available today at the department's Ger- ber yard at 9380 San Benito Ave.; the department's Los Mo- linos yard at 8715 Fox St.; the Red Bluff branch of the Tehama County Library at 645 Madison St., and the Corning Fire De- partment at 814 Fifth St. Residents are asked to bring their own shovels. Red Bluff City Manager Richard Crabtree said Tues- day that the city is preparing for a wet weekend and antici- pating an increase in demand for services.
