ByPhilipMarceloand Denise Lavoie The Associated Press BOSTON Bostonscrambled to dig out Monday from the second major winter storm in a week and clear snow- clogged streets for a cel- ebratory Super Bowl pa- rade, and forecasters from Philadelphia to Portland, Maine, warned that "flash freezing" could make roads dangerously slippery. Officials said a Massachu- setts woman was run over and killed by a snowplow, and New York state police said two people were killed in a multivehicle crash on an interstate in Rye. Here's the latest on the storm: Fifty-seven-year-old Cyn- thia Levine was struck and killed by a snowplow just before 10 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of a condo- minium complex in Wey- mouth, south of Boston, the Norfolk district attor- ney's office said. In New York, state police said they were investigat- ing a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 when a third vehicle lost control on the highway and hit the two ve- hicles from the first crash. The cause was not immedi- ately known, but the crash occurred as snow and freez- ing rain hindered travel throughout the region. Officials in Ohio, where the storm hit before slam- ming into the Northeast, said a Toledo police officer died while shoveling snow in his driveway Sunday and the city's 70-year-old mayor was hospitalized after an accident while he was out checking road conditions. The officer, who was not named, died of an apparent heart attack. City and med- ical officials say Mayor D. Michael Collins was hospi- talized after he had a heart attack and his SUV crashed into a pole. The snowstorm, which dumped more than 19 inches of snow on Chicago, deepened off the southern New England coast, bring- ing accumulations of 9 to 16 inches to Boston and up to a foot of slushy wintry mix to Hartford, Connecticut, Providence, Rhode Island, southern New Hampshire and Vermont — places still reeling from the up to 3 feet they got last week. "For New Englanders, we're used to this dur- ing the winter," said Matt Doody of the National Weather Service. But he cautioned that the evening commute would be messy. More than 20 counties in New York state were under a winter storm warning, with up to 16 inches fore- cast for the eastern Catskill Mountains, and northern and central Taconics. Many Long Island schools delayed opening or closed due to a forecast of snow and freez- ing rain. By early afternoon, central Massachusetts had more than a foot. The Philadelphia area received about an inch of snow before the precipita- tion changed to rain. Fore- casters expected 3 to 5 inches to fall in the Lehigh Valley, and 5 to 11 inches in northern Pennsylvania. Parts of northern Ohio got at least a foot. The National Weather Service issued a "flash freeze" warning for New York City and Long Island. Similar warnings were out for Philadelphia and up the coast to Maine as temper- atures dropped, freezing roads already slick with snow and slush. Rush-hour commut- ers in New York City were stranded on a packed sub- way train that lost power for 2½ hours Monday be- fore it could be towed to a station. Five other trains were stuck behind it. Police on Long Island say a tractor-trailer flipped on its side around 11:30 a.m. Monday on the westbound Long Island Expressway near Dix Hills. Several other accidents were reported in the same area. GENE J. PUSKAR — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Groundhog Club handler Ron Ploucha, center, holds Punxsutawney Phil, the weather prognosticating groundhog, during the 129th celebration of Groundhog Day on Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa., on Monday. The Associated Press PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA. The handlers of Pennsylva- nia's most famous ground- hog, Punxsutawney Phil, said Monday the furry ro- dent has forecast six more weeks of winter. Members of the top hat- wearing Inner Circle an- nounced the "prediction" Monday morning. A German legend has it that if a furry rodent sees his shadow on Feb. 2, winter will last another six weeks. If not, spring comes early. The forecast was also announced on Twitter, as was referenced in the offi- cial proclamation read by Jeff Lundy, the Fair Weath- erman of the Inner Circle. "Forecasts abound on the Internet, but, I, Punx- sutawney Phil am still your best bet. Yes, a shadow I see, you can start to Twit- ter, hash tag: Six more weeks of winter!" The forecast was deliv- ered after a steady pre- dawn rain turned to snow as temperatures dropped from the high 30s to around freezing. Despite the German leg- end, Phil's handlers don't wait to see if he sees his shadow — as he likely would not have on such an overcast day. Instead, the Inner Circle decide on the forecast ahead of time and announce it on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in the town for which the groundhog is named, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Records going back to 1887 show Phil has now predicted more winter 102 times while forecasting an early spring just 17 times. There are no records for the remaining years. Phil's counterpart in New York City, Staten Is- land Chuck, delivered a conflicting message in call- ing for an early spring af- ter not seeing his shadow. As blustery conditions ease in New England, spotty snow showers will push across the central Great Lakes. Sunshine is in store for much of the southern Atlantic Seaboard, while rain gathers farther west over part of Texas to coastal Louisiana, in response to a developing storm in northern Mexico. An Alberta Clipper storm will spread a swath of light snow from the northern Rockies to the northern Plains. Warmth will build from the Southwest to the southern Plains.
