ByTamiAbdollah The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Former rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight had his $2 million bail revoked Monday as a possible flight risk after his arrest last week on suspi- cion of murder in the death of a man who was run down in Compton. The ruling came af- ter detectives told a judge the 49-year-old founder of Death Row Records could face a lengthy prison sen- tence because of a violent criminal past and had the potential to intimidate wit- nesses, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokeswoman Ni- cole Nishida said. Knight has been in cus- tody since surrendering on Friday and is scheduled to appear Tuesday at a court- house in Compton. Knight was at the cen- ter of one of the most no- torious rap conflicts of the 1990s, pitting Tupac Shakur against Biggie Smalls in an East Coast-West Coast ri- valry. Knight was sent to prison for nearly five years for badly beating a rival with Shakur at a Las Vegas hotel, just hours before Shakur was fatally shot while rid- ing in Knight's car just east of the Strip. In the current case, Knight struck two men with his pickup truck on Thursday in a parking lot. The collision killed his friend, Terry Carter, 55, and injured Cle "Bone" Sloan, 51, an actor and film con- sultant. Defense attorney James Blatt has said Knight acci- dentally ran over the men as he tried to escape a vi- cious attack. Authorities have said Knight argued with Sloan earlier at a location for the film "Straight Outta Comp- ton" about the rise of the rap group N.W.A. and then was told by sheriff's depu- ties providing security to leave. The argument resumed in the parking lot where Knight and Sloan ex- changed punches through a window of the pickup truck before the two men were run down, authori- ties said. Blatt has said Knight was attacked by four peo- ple, including Sloan, and that Knight hit the gas and fled in fear. The incident came less than six months after Knight was shot six times at a West Hollywood night- club in August — the second shooting he has survived. No arrests have been made in that case. At 6-foot-4 and weigh- ing 325 pounds, Knight is an imposing figure who is credited, in part, with helping create Death Row Records when he strong- armed another label to re- lease Dr. Dre from his con- tract, said Chuck Creekmur, CEO of allhiphop.com. Knight and Dre later had a falling out, and Dre left the record company that eventually declared bank- ruptcy and was auctioned off. In November, Knight pleaded not guilty to a rob- bery charge filed after a ce- lebrity photographer ac- cused him of stealing her camera in Beverly Hills. Be- cause of prior convictions, he could face up to 30 years in prison in that case. California Department of Corrections and Reha- bilitation spokesman Jef- frey Callison said weekend visiting for inmates passed without Manson getting married. Afton Elaine Burton and the 80-year-old Man- son obtained a 90-day marriage license late last year. It expires Thursday, making this past weekend the couple's final opportu- nity to hold a wedding in- side a visiting room at Cal- ifornia State Prison, Corco- ran. If the wedding is to happen, the couple must register for a new Kings County marriage license. Burton, who goes by the name "Star" and says she loves Manson, left her home halfway across the country and has spent the last nine years living near the Cen- tral California prison. Man- son was convicted of kill- ing seven people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski. Burton, who maintains websites espousing Man- son's innocence, has not re- sponded to recent requests seeking comment on the re- lationship. Shortly after ob- taining the license, she told The Associated Press the nuptials were imminent. Manson became notori- ous in 1969 as the leader of a "family" of young kill- ers. Manson follower Su- san Atkins died of cancer behind bars, but Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Kren- winkel remain impris- oned. So do Charles "Tex" Watson, Bruce Davis and Robert Beausoleil.
