It is very refreshing to hear these students give unsolicited accolades to their parents and teachers. It was pointed out repeatedly that these young people really matter in our community. This week they learned about spiders and how they live. Here Kylie Kvalvik made a marshmallow spider and the pretzels represent the eight legs. They are utilizing an on-line reading program for second and third grades that focuses on building comprehension and fluency skills. There are also many games included in the programs that keep the students engaged. In addition, the students can access Common Core-aligned apps with activities designed for kindergarten through fi h grades, that teach typing skills and provide practice in math and language arts. We definitely live in a technology-based world and during SERRF students are greatly benefiting. SERRF METTEER STUDENTS LEARNING ONLINE Rancho Tehama SERRF students hosted Nutrition Education of Obesity Pre- vention for a lively after- noon of nutrition educa- tion and physical activities. Students learned the value of many of the foods we eat. They were given samples of fresh and dried fruits and nuts. The students were then challenged to make a face, using their own creative ideas followed by energetic activities outside, making for a great way to end the week. Students learn obesity prevention American Legion, Mount Lassen Post # 167 conducted the Oratorical Scholarship contest on Jan. 17 at the Red Bluff Veterans Memo- rial Hall, 735 Oak St. The contest consisted of high school students giving two speeches,first an 8-10 minute speech on an aspect of the United States Consti- tution, second a 3-5 minute speech on one of four Con- stitutional amendments. Students were judged on a number of factors including content, logic and style. The first place winner of $150 was Hannah Huhn, second place winner of $100 was Trey Shilts and third place winner of $50 was Natalie Renfroe. All contestants attend Red Bluff Union High School.
